The spring semester is now upon us as college students. I have found this to be the most difficult semester to get excited about. I do not want to get up for my classes. I do not want to do homework. I do not want the responsibility or the work or any of it.
Here are a few ways that I am getting myself excited for the spring semester:
Find a reason to get up in the morning.
Getting up is not fun, whether you are forced to get up for that 8 a.m., or you just need to get up to get work done. Try to find something that will make you want to get out of bed in the morning. I bought two different types of really nice teas—a lemon and chamomile green tea and a honey and lavender tea. I washed and prepped my cute Lilly travel mug. Getting up and getting to drink that delicious cup of tea on these cold winter mornings will hopefully help me get excited for the day.
If you are not into teas, try creating an upbeat playlist that will get you awake and ready to go. Download new songs and keep the selections fresh so that you will always want to get up and listen. If you love fashion, allow yourself to pick out your outfit of the day and post a cute Insta pic, but only if you get up in time.
Splurge on some fun school supplies.
I went to pack my backpack the night before the first day of class and realized that I had not bought any new folders or notebooks for the upcoming semester. Head to Target or Staples and buy yourself some colorful new pens and some patterned folders and notebooks.
Take your new pens and organize your new agenda. I personally like the Lilly Pulitzer agenda, but Target and Walmart have some really cute ones for a fraction of the cost. Having a cute agenda somehow makes my busy schedule seem much more fun and manageable.
Organize your desk and room.
Getting yourself organized can be fun and it definitely makes me feel more prepared and excited to get things done. Coordinating classes by color and organizing my desk and room always makes me feel happier and less stressed. I use my agenda to write down all of my assignments that are due (by color, of course). I also write the days of the week on post-it notes and stick them to the top of my desk. I write what needs to be done by each day on them. This, by far, has been the best organization trick I have learned in college.
Get involved.
Sometimes, especially after being in college for a few semesters, our excitement runs low and we lose steam. If you have time, find a new club or organization to join. You can make new friends and get excited again. Sometimes getting excited about new things also helps to ignite the excitement for old activities, as well. You can also switch roles by getting a leadership position in a club or volunteering to lead a special project.
Remember why you are in college.
This semester, I am taking a lot of general education classes and that makes it even harder to get excited. Sit down and think about how someday, the classes you are taking might help you achieve your higher goals. Even if it is only to complete your requirements for your degree so that you can have a great career, it will help you see the bigger picture.
Have a great semester and enjoy college! It flies by quickly.
