I've come to the conclusion that life is too short to not enjoy dessert. Or pizza. Or any guilty pleasure, for that matter. What fun is it to live a life completely bound by eating only foods that serve a nutritional purpose and never things that simply just taste amazing? What meaning would life even have if there was no ice cream to scoop on top of a brownie? These are the questions that haunt me. The only issue, however, with overdoing it on the bad stuff is that it leaves you not feeling your best. While you shouldn’t feel guilty about indulging every now and then, sometimes you need a little reboot to feel more like yourself. Shape magazine asked 16 registered dietitians to give one piece of advice on the mental, physical and nutritional things you can do to make yourself feel better after you eat too much.
1. Grab a friend for a workout.
Making a plan with a partner helps ensure that you don’t cancel. Personally, if I know ahead of time that I have an indulgent night out ahead, I'll text a friend beforehand and plan to meet up the next day for a good workout.
2. Remember why you love healthy food.
Keep in mind how much eating healthy affects your mood and lifestyle. That'll prevent you from binging on unhealthy foods the rest of the weekend.
3. Commit to a quick rebound.
Again, keep the indulging to an isolated event and jump back on the healthy bandwagon right after. Hit that reset button as soon as possible.
4. Realize it's not a big deal.
Enjoy the treat and don’t let guilt overwhelm you. Life's short, eat dessert first
5. Increase your intake of water.
Nothing helps to flush your system than water. And the more, the merrier. This will keep you from mindlessly snacking throughout the day.
6. Don’t beat yourself up.
Don’t let your mind obsess over something you've already eaten. Its already in your body and guess what? That's OK! You work hard and are allowed to eat foods that you really want.
7. Increase your vegetables.
The next meal, double up on veggies merely to reap the nutritional benefits. Also, adding in more fruit will help keep those sugar cravings controlled.
8. Check in with your body.
Listen to your hunger cues and try to stop eating once your full, regardless of what food it is.
8. Figure out if there's an underlying issue.
If this isn't an isolated, "treat yo'self" occasion and you find that you're overeating due to emotions, think about what the problem is. Take your emotions to the gym and work it out that way. This can help you to re-center and release some stress.
9. Pretend nothing happened.
Again, no dwelling. Don’t wallow or think you've derailed all of your progress. By pretending it didn’t happen, you can go about your normal, healthy routine again.
10. The next morning, eat a high protein breakfast.
Increasing your protein the next morning will keep junk-food cravings at bay and rev up your metabolism.
11. Add in some lemon water too.
Lemon water is super beneficial in helping your body reset, helps with inflammation, and gets your digestion back on track.
12. Increase Fiber
Fiber aids your digestion, keeps cholesterol levels low, and helps you stay fuller for longer.
13. Don’t withhold food.
Aka don't skip the next meal. That will only lead to uncontrollable hunger and less willpower to turn down unhealthy foods!
14. Understand the true meaning of a healthy lifestyle.
Sometimes overindulging helps you realize how grateful you are to live a healthy lifestyle most of the time. No one food or meal makes you "healthy" or "unhealthy". A healthy lifestyle includes indulging every now and then.
15. Don’t let an indulgence spiral into an actual unhealthy lifestyle.
Don’t wait until Monday to "start over." Start right after the treat. When you wait longer, you give yourself more permission to get off track again.
Enjoy the cake, pizza, or margarita, for that matter. Life is not meant to be spent wishing you could eat those things but rather enjoying all the deliciousness the world has to offer!
