Going into the end of the semester, stress levels for college students will be at an all-time high. Dealing with finals, securing internships and facing the sudden realization that the school year is almost done is overwhelming. In order to combat these feelings, it is important that you take care of yourself in order to perform at your best. Here are some tips to do that.
Sleep well
It's easy during the majority of the school year to get off track with your sleep cycle and become extremely tired during the week. However, that sleep debt is usually filled by waking up in the afternoon on weekends. During finals week, you do not have that luxury. That is why maintaining a solid sleep cycle is more important than ever. Aim to get a majority of your sleep at night while mixing in occasional short naps during the day to ensure that your brain will be performing at an optimal level.
Have fun
This may sound counterintuitive, but make sure that during the few weeks leading up to finals you go out and have fun with friends. Nothing beats the stress of school like having tons of laughter with your friends one night. In addition, most sorority and fraternity formals happen during this time and they are a good way to forget about school for a night. Just try not to drink too much so you can avoid a nasty hangover that will sideline your studying for the next day.
Although it may seem obvious, exercising is one of the greatest ways to ease stress and also to allow your brain to function well. Break up your study sessions into smaller chunks and do physical activity between them such as basketball or going for a run. Even something as simple as walking around the block for 15 minutes can alleviate stress. Although it may tire you in the short run, intense physical activity will actually give you more energy. Those 30 minutes you spend in the gym will give you hours of energy later.
Treat yourself (in moderation)
When on late night studying binges, the need for junk food hits every time. Don't skip out on the fast food runs or pizza orders. Just make sure that you are getting sufficient nutrients during the day and the extra calories won't hurt you. Besides, you have all summer to burn off any weight that you may gain during the final weeks of school. Now is not the time to worry about your physique.
Remember why you're in school
Sometimes, students get so stressed out about school that they forget why they are even here in the first place. Remember all of the dreams you had coming to college such as becoming a doctor, going to law school, or getting a 4.0 GPA? Know that when you achieve those goals, all of the effort will be worth it. Focusing on the positive results will help your stress levels plummet and give you confidence that your future will be bright.
