As an incoming freshman to college, I didn’t want to give up the life of sports. In high school I didn’t go a season without them, and I didn’t see myself giving that up anytime soon. Thankfully enough, I was able to walk on to my crew team. I’ve never rowed before, but that’s a different story. No matter what team you’re on in college, they instantly become your second family.
Joining a team as a freshman, you immediately have a whole team of friends after your first day of practice. A team to eat meals with, spend time with after class, and of course, a group of people to profusely sweat with at practice! Trust me, it’s the best thing in the world having a team by your side.
The best thing about your team is that you do everything together. Every morning after practice you eat breakfast, every weekend you hang out after time trials, and every day after life you walk around campus together.
Seriously, I don’t think I go a day without seeing my teammates, no matter if were in season or out. They’re everywhere and I love it. Walking to class I usually see at least half of the team and I love to embarrass them by waving a little too much. During winter break I went through a withdrawal not seeing my team everyday, although I did enjoy my time spent on the couch.
When we're in season, I see them pretty much for the whole day, and here’s the thing about your team: its really hard to get sick of them. If you do, you’re a little bit screwed because you’ll most likely see them in two hours for your second training of the day. For me personally, I’ve never had a problem with the team and we all get along and enjoy each other’s company. I think that’s the case for most teams, we all support each other, fighting and not getting along would get us nowhere.
We lean on each other constantly for support. Whether it's that someone had a bad day, or someone is just having a rough patch in there academics, we are always concerned for one another and look out for the best for them. I can always look up to my team for a smile or a good laugh when I’m down.
I never thought we would become the way we are today, but we are such a close group of girls and I am forever thankful for that. Coming into college, I didn’t think I would make a lot of friends, but meeting every one of my teammates was a blessing. I look up to all of them and hope I have half the spirit they do.
I never could have imagined a better group of girls to work my butt off with, and I cant wait for a full four years with the most amazing team imaginable.
