We have all grown up seeing our parents every morning having a cup of coffee to start the day, and ever since then it has become a norm to do the same. You wake up, start your daily routine and just before you can start your day, have your morning coffee whether it is home brew, Starbucks etc. However the one thing that comes into question is caffeine do people take a day, or more importantly how much do the younger generations consume within a day? The only way to do this is dive in a little deeper into how much caffeine we as people consume, how much is a healthy portion, and then lastly are we going a little overboard.
It is shown that in a single cup of coffee that the human body takes in 95mg (milligrams) of caffeine. In adults ages 18 and up, it’s relatively safe, depending on your health, to consume 400 mg of caffeine a day. That’s about the same as four cups of coffee, 10 cans of soda, or for any people with busy lives, two energy shots. However with heavy usage of energy drinks, or for today’s athlete’s the usage of pre-workouts, caffeine intake has become a big issue when it comes to health. Some energy drinks and pre-workout supplements have as much as 400 mg of caffeine in a single serving not including any additives that may be found in them, which can be highly dangerous.
As we all know too much caffeine can have adverse affects like restlessness, stomach aches and irritability, but it also can be much more serious than most people think. High caffeine intake has also lead to such things as insomnia, high blood pressure, higher risk of heart attack and even death from overdoses. Even though all of this may seem frightening, the real issue is that of how much the younger generation is consuming on a day to day basis.
Due to their bodies still in growing stages, children under the age of 18 can safely consume 100 mg of caffeine a day. However it has become a major health issue for children who consume more than that leading to things like obesity, heart disease and other serious health issues. If a trend like this continues, younger generations will face a huge amount of health problems as they grow older.
