Imagine if someone offered you an all expenses paid trip around the world. The catch? You can't bring anyone, just the company of yourself and all those unknown adventures awaiting. Would you take it?
The biggest life lesson I have yet to face in my 20 years is that I cannot rely on others for my own happiness. This is not something you can just accomplish overnight, but it is a priority.
Whether it is relationships, jobs or personal battles, something out there has selfishly gobbled up all of your love, time and commitment. You rely on it every day to the point of toxicity.
A daily struggle I have for myself is to ask whether I am selfish to say I am unhappy when I am blessed to have some great things happening in my life.
This year I have realized that to lead a healthy and happy life, I must depend on myself for happiness, security and love. Easier said then done, I do realize.
I spent the past three years being completely dependent on another human being. When you are like me and I know there are others who can share this story, when you are bullied or alone as a child, you grow up with a hole in your chest. A hole that can easily be filled with the love for another human, or the attention we get from relying on them. My happiness started to rely on him and when that person left my life, I felt miserable without being able to accept or understand why. Finally, I realized I had given him the power to be my entire life. I was so dependent on this person that I had no idea how to be an individual anymore.
Did you know that it is okay to be alone sometimes? Because I didn't! Most of us hate being alone, and we crave the attention and affection of another to make us happy.
You can't have relationships with other people until the relationship with yourself is rock solid.
Honestly, for me, being dependent on yourself is an incredible feeling. You learn things about yourself you had forgotten. You begin to understand where you place your feet and how you can start walking your own path. Having YOU time is something everyone needs and so many people overlook it as a minority.
So this year, I started doing things I enjoyed, for no reason what so ever. I started up yoga, which helps me to find inner balance and calm the complexities of my day. I began to sing again which has always been a hobby that makes me happy. I do things for ME because I want to and they provide me with happiness. I finally accept and realize, 'why would anyone want to love me if I can't even be strong enough to love myself.'
Here is my advice to focus on you and only you.
- Remember when you were little and you used to play dress up for no reason other than the fact that it made you smile? Do that!! Do something for no reason other than the fact that it will make you smile.
- Most of us will only put 100 percent into something if someone else is involved. For example, if your boyfriend is coming over for dinner you are probably going to slave over the stove for hours, taste everything, then burn something and quickly start all over. Instead ... why not slave over the stove for yourself? Make a meal you can enjoy.
- Have you ever wanted to go do something but couldn't find anyone to go with?Example, I used to hate going to the market alone. If I could not find someone available to go with me, I just wouldn't go. Now, I love going alone. I enjoy wandering around the market, browsing new products, taking my time, and enjoying the alone time. You have a better chance of observing your surroundings and really experiencing life when you allow yourself to be alone sometimes.
- Learn a new hobby. There is always room for improvement in every aspect of your life. Learn something new just for fun and JUST FOR YOU. Don't take up cooking because you want to impress your friends, learn something to better yourself. Dare to try something new!
- SMILE!!!!!! Even if today you feel like your carrying a crazy amount of stress around and you rather be buried under your covers in bed, Just smile! It will immediately help you to feel better. Another advice, if you ever feel like wallowing in bed, force yourself to get outside and take a walk. I promise you will begin to feel stronger as you smell the air and leave the toxic environment of your room.
I am not saying spending a lot of time with your BFF or having a serious relationship is a bad thing. All I am saying is you deserve to love yourself. And you NEED to make time for yourself as well.
I realized I loved someone else more than I loved me. That is a problem. I aim this year to correct it.
It is all about self-love and commitment to yourself.
At the end of the day, the only person that is 100 percent there for you is you.
Be selfish, say “I love myself more than anyone else." Treat yourself to something YOU love. My guilty pleasure is taking nice long bubble baths, sitting by the pool to tan, and now yoga as well. I love how focusing on myself has helped me to become a stronger woman. I love how for even a moment, I can relax and not listen to the clutter and problems of life.
The most important relationship you will ever have in life is the one you have with yourself! You deserve to be happy and you have the ability to be. It is up to you whether you are or not.
