The best and most painful thing that has happened in my life is being brought up as a Mets and Jets fan. My father decided it would be a good idea to raise me to root for the teams he roots for. For the most part, it has been a nightmare. Regardless of the nightmares, the bond that I have with him when it comes to sports is truly special, and I couldn't thank him enough for not being a Yankees fan.
Now I got into rooting for these teams around 2005, a year where the Mets were on a rise and the Jets weren't really doing too much. Then came 2006 when the New York Mets went to the National League Championship Series and ended up losing to the St. Louis Cardinals in the hardest seven game series I have ever witnessed. The nightmare that I constantly had was Carlos Beltran looking at the filthiest curveball Adam Wainwright has probably ever thrown in his life for a called strike three to end the series and watch the Cardinals celebrate at Shea Stadium.
My dad and I thought, "They’ll be back next year, don’t worry." Well, they never went back until this magical year of 2015. The following year of 2007 and 2008 ended with heartbreak collapses and watching the Philadelphia Phillies take over the division and win a World Series in the process. You can also forget the years 2009–2014, a brand new Citi Field opened in 2009 and hasn't seen anything to smile about the rebuilding ball club.
Let's not forget about the green and white. The New York Jets have been up and down ever since I started rooting for them. The magical Sanchise years of Mark Sanchez, Thomas Jones, Jerricho Cotchery, Braylon Edwards, and, of course, Rex Ryan was the most fun time to watch this underdog team play. Back to back years (2009 and 2010), this wildcard team ran through every team as they got to the conference championship both years. One win away to the Superbowl, and neither team could get that one win to reach it to the big stage.
During this time my mom was having a ball. Her New York Yankees were spending their way to the World Series. A brand new Yankee Stadium in 2009, a brand new looking ball club. Names like Mark Teixeira, C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Nick Swisher were all newbies to New York. The recipe obviously worked—in 2009, the Yanks won over 100 regular season games and won the World Series. Seeing the Yankees win was not fun; not only was my mother a die hard fan, but some of my best friends would be rubbing it in my face. Oh, and don't forget about the two Superbowl's Eli Manning and the Giants have won from beating Tom Brady and the Patriots. She has seen her share of winning and championship parades.
Now my household is divided with every sport. While my father and I root for the Mets and Jets, my mother is rooting for the Yankees and Giants. Great. The difference between us is the that we hate the Yankees, and my mom has no problem with the Mets and actually roots for them when they don't play the Yanks. Call us Yankee haters.
During the season there is a lot of flipping the channels. During football season and both the Jets and Giants are on at 1 p.m., there is a problem. Half of us want to watch the green and white, and the other half (my mom and grandpa) want to watch the G-men. Don't even get me started with baseball season. At some point of the night I am forced to listen to Michael Kay, David Cone, and Ken Singleton call the Yankees games when I could listening to the great trio of Gary Cohen, Ron Darling, and Keith Hernandez call the Metsies.
This year was extra special for me and my father. We finally saw a glimpse of hope from our New York Mets. Making it to the World Series this year has me very excited for the next few years. We also got a surprising season out of the New York Jets who finished 10–six. It’s looking bright on the other side for sure, and I can honestly say that the time is now. All the years of pain and waiting for my teams to actually do something well, I can start celebrating for seasons of winning—what more can you ask for? The pages have flipped for my house, as with the Mets on the rise with a young stud pithing rotation and at the top of the league, the Yankees are getting old and are past the Jeter, Rivera, Pettitte, and Posada days.
Having a household rivalry among our favorite teams has been a huge part of my life, and to be completely honest, it's quite fun. It's all about the bragging right when it comes to sports teams. It's a new era in my home: An era of the orange and blue as well as the green and white.
