When most people think of horses they think “big and dangerous”. But, they are also gentle, funny, and smart and I can prove it. I want everyone to know that horses are not that scary once you know more about them because they are not like bears. I have some useful knowledge on horses to help you become less afraid.
First of all, horses don’t want to hurt you, bite you or kick you. They do these scary things out of fear. Their fight or flight response may cause them to kick if you walk behind them if they don’t know who or what you are. They will kick to defend and protect themselves. You should always pat their butt while walking behind them so they know that you are there. When they eat a treat out of your hand, they don’t grab it with their teeth. They gently use their lips to scoop it out of your palm. Horses still may bite but, all animals do. It’s just a little scarier because they have bigger teeth. Truthfully, they don’t usually rip your skin off. It’s more of a bad pinch with their front teeth. Horses get grumpy, annoyed and show signs of their bad mood with body language. If you can read that language, then you can avoid the cross fire. For example, if you come across a horse with his/her ears pinned way back that is considered a sign of anger. Step away from the horse. But if their ears are floppy, then that horse is relaxed and you can approach it. Knowing what mood the horse is in can make your interaction safer and less scary.
Horses like to play, just like dogs. You can give them a giant ball to kick around. Yes, horses will chase a ball around their paddock if given the opportunity. Horses can get bored and love interaction just like everyone else. They will play with other horses, balls, ropes, and even throw around their feed tubs. I find it amusing when horses play and even more amusing when they lick you. Some horses will lick your hand after you give them a treat, some will lick the wall or stall bars when they are done eating, and some will lick salt blocks if you give them it. Also, depending how well behaved your horse is, you can dress them up. Halloween costumes are available for horses! Who doesn’t love a giant bumblebee or dragon on Halloween?
Horses are very intelligent creatures. They can do tricks just like dogs but better. Horses can hug, nod, smile, bow, and some can even count. You can teach your horse to do anything with the right amount of patience and treats. They are very intelligent creatures. If you’re riding and are nervous, they can sense that. Your body language plays a role in how the horses will react to you. If you are nervous, then they think there’s something to be nervous about. They can feel your shaky body or hear your nervous voice and will react to it. If you’re calm and relaxed, then your horse will be too. They feed off your body language. So, relax and try to form a bond with them. It’ll make your interaction more enjoyable. If you’re not a horse person, befriend someone who is. They will tell you all about how amazing these animals are. For now, you may think a dog is a man’s best friend, but wait till you befriend a horse.
