Over the past few days, it’s been very somber for the Miami Marlins organization. If you haven’t heard, Jose Fernandez, the Marlins’ electric starting pitcher, died in a boating accident that claimed the lives of two other Miami men on Saturday night this past weekend. Not only did the Miami Marlins lose a great player, they lost a great person. If you asked the other Marlins players, they will tell you that Jose Fernandez had such excitement and passion for life that he could hardly contain it. The more stories you read about what Fernandez did for his family, friends, and team, the harder it becomes to think about how his life so tragically cut off.
With this in mind, I would like to see Jose Fernandez win the Roberto Clemente award.
For a little background, Roberto Clemente is the legendary Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder who tragically died in a plane accident trying to deliver relief to his home country of Nicaragua. Today, the Robert Clemente award is given to a baseball player who best exemplifies his character and what he gave to his team and community as a leader off the field. Given the stories that have been spread throughout this past week about Fernandez’s life, I couldn’t think of a better person to win this year’s Roberto Clemente award this season. Honor Jose Fernandez one last time.
