When you're a hockey fan, words may have different meanings. What does that mean? Well, to normal people words mean their literal definition, but to hockey fans, they usually mean something different. Something totally different. As a big hockey fan, I know that when I hear certain words, my thoughts are probably way different than yours. Ready to pick into a hockey fan's brain? Let's go!
1. Snow
To most people: Snow is the fun stuff that falls from the sky, can cause traffic problems or school closings.
To hockey fans: The stuff that flies off of a skate, most commonly when you stop short or turn.
2. Check.
To most people: A way to transfer money, the thing you get after a meal out, a mark that signifies something has been done or was seen, or keeping an eye on something.
To hockey fans: The stopping of getting hit with a stick or body, halting in movement of those targeted, sometimes even knocking them to the ground. See "Mac Trucked" by New York Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh below.
3. Duck.
To most people: An aquatic bird that we seem to like to feed bread. Common first name: Donald for males and Daisy for females. Famous quote: "Aflac."
To hockey fans: Protect. Your. Face. Pucks are made to fly and they do. They may be small, but they're small and they're heavy. When they hit you in the face, head or anywhere else, they hurt. Protect the goods.
4. Stick.
To most people: Something you find on the ground, usually a small branch or a small part of a tree.
To hockey fans: The big thing players hold to play. They use it to get the puck, move with it and it's the main tool (besides the puck) used to score.
5. Goal.
To most people: A goal is something that you are working towards. You set yourself on a task and when you work hard and finish it, you have accomplished your goal.
6. Lord Stanley.
To most people: Someone of royalty, hence the term "Lord". They happened to have the name "Stanley".

7. Cup.
To most people: A cup is a drinking utensil. Sometimes tall, sometimes small. Can be filled with any liquid your heart desires.
To hockey fans: The Cup. The three-foot-tall silver giant. The thing we dream of as children, wanting to do nothing but hoist it over our heads, drink from it and use it as a cereal bowl (and maybe cuddle with it).
8. Sauce.
To most people: Sauce is something that goes on your pasta, can be red, white, green or any other color depending on what ingredients you use. Tastes better homemade than it does from a jar.
To hockey fans: A pass that is lifted. A pass that hovers over the ice before landing (hopefully) on someones stick or if you're lucky, in the net.
9. Post.
To most people: A pole in the ground that holds things up, usually flags or fences surrounding our homes. To our friends across the sea, it means mail.
To hockey fans: The things that are on either side of the goal. When a puck hits it, it either makes the most satisfying or heart wrenching "PING!," depending on which team you like.
10. Filthy.
To most people: Dirty, gross or messy. Usually something that hasn't been cleaned in a while. A term of utter disgust.
To hockey fans: An insanely good and or completely unreal play or goal. Something that makes you say "wicked shot" no matter who did it.
11. Flow.
To most people: The movement of something, usually a liquid. It travels in a certain direction dictated by those around it.
To hockey fans: The hair. Long, voluminous hair that flaps gently in the wind when the helmet is off. Also the hair seen at the base of the neck when the helmet is on.
12. Icing.
To most people: A sugary sweet topping, it's technically made for cakes and cupcakes, but let's be real, it tastes good on everything.
To hockey fans: When the puck is shot across the center red line and across the opposing goal line. Short-handed teams can intentionally ice the puck, while full strength teams must follow all rules.
