1) Join something
All through middle and high school, I was part of band. I never knew how much of an impact that made on my life now. I had friends, I remained busy, and I felt like I was important to the band. It was crucial for me because I was so shy and awkward. You will gain another family, and it will be a home away from home.
2) Don't be afraid to make new friends
The first day of high school was so strange and exciting. I walked in to my first class, and we didn't have assigned seats. Because I was late to class, I had to take the last seat available. I didn't know anyone sitting near me, and I immediately felt shy. As the semester went on, I opened up and began talking to them (or maybe I was forced to because of group projects). Ultimately, sometimes being put in awkward situations helps you gain new friends.
3) Pay attention in class
Alright, alright; I know this is probably the hundredth time you've heard someone say this. That just means it's crucial that you listen and work hard. If I had listened and studied as much as you can, I wouldn't have such terrible test scores. I know a handful of people who wish they could change their study habits through high school; don't be one of them.
4) Do your homework
Again, the most repeated tip in history for high schoolers. Homework isn't given out for the heck of it. My dad is a high school teacher, and he complains about grading it almost every day, but he knows it helps his students learn more. Doing homework can statistically improve your grades, and will also give you great study help. Plus, it's practice to actual quizzes and tests, and by doing your work you can earn higher grades.
5) Don't spend time with those you don't want to
Don't be afraid to say no and to stand up for yourself. Make sure your feelings and thoughts are heard, and make sure you find a support group. Don't feel bad about dropping friends who make you think twice about who you are. You are allowed to feel how you feel, so don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
6) Wait until you're completely ready
Boys and girls will break your hearts, it's just how love works. I have friends from high school who met someone and fell in love, and everything seemed perfect with them. My friends felt like it was the right time and with the right person, and they lost their virginity. I can't express the pain they felt, how deep it rooted in them and how much they regret their decisions because they were left broken hearted. Hormones are raging in this time of your life, and unfortunately, people do whatever they can to get what they want.
7) Seek help
As a high schooler, I felt like I should have never asked for help. Whether it was homework help, or help seeking comfort from my depression, I never knew where to turn. Guidance counsellors, teachers, friends, and family are all great place to turn to when you need any kind of help. Don't be afraid to seek help, because in the long run, it will help you more than finding yourself stuck in the present or the future. You will thank yourself when you find the help you've been looking for.
Although most of these tips have been soaring through your heads for as long as you can remember, I'm stressing the importance of them once again. Make sure you're enjoying yourself to the best you can, and make your high school experience much easier than mine was.
