Depending on your personality, you (or people you know) have characterized yourself as an introvert or extrovert. By definition, an introvert is "a shy, reticent person". We know the stereotypical introvert, the one society doesn't believe to have any social skills or leave their room. We also know the stereotypical extrovert, who is extremely outgoing, loud, expressive, is always social, and has tons of friends. We categorize people into these two very different groups with immediate judgement, which can sometimes be correct, but most of the time is very, very wrong.
When you meet me, I can be shy. I can also be extremely outgoing and friendly. I'm not afraid to meet new people, introducing myself does not make me sick to my stomach. I'm not a shy person, but I can be shy. II have been this way since I was a kid. I have my moments, and so do loads of other people. I like to talk and I welcome new experiences with open arms, but there are times where I can be quiet and cautious. I love a good night in, watching movies and laying in bed all night, but I love getting dressed up, going out, and dancing the night away equally as much. I find that I share the characteristics of extroverts and introverts, which makes me an ambivert.
An ambivert is a person who are generally 50% introvert and 50% extrovert. They are social and fun and love a good time, but find downtime to be just as great. They are observant, intuitive, and can pick up emotional signals in a moment's time. They do not shy away from attention, but at the same time do not want to be in the spotlight 24/7. They can appreciate home comforts but also have a love for getting out of the house. They are neither the introvert nor the extrovert, but immensely relate to both.
For years I wondered which side I related more to, because society tends to stereotype introverts and extroverts in extreme ways. I used to say I was an extrovert, because I just did not see myself as the shy, reserved and withdrawn person that people see introverts to be. But recently, I have discovered that there is a mixture of both, and that if you relate to extroverts and introverts, than you fall within that category. I am 100% an ambivert, and it's definitely quiet the balance of calm and fun.
So, if you find that you or someone you know seems to fall between introverted and extroverted, the answer to all questions is probably ambivert.
Also, quick side note: despite the fact that there are introverts, extroverts, and ambiverts, everyone is their own person. No one will ever be the definition of a societal expectation, so try to stay attune to individuality and personality when meeting people. Never judge a book by it's cover, kids!
