Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays of all time, because who doesn't like to eat all day? Yes, it's true, many of us only travel home for the food, but it's also a matter of being thankful for all the wonderful things that we are blessed with in our lives. Thanksgiving is made up of many different parts that each family takes and makes their own.
1. Family
It's a holiday which means families are brought together for food, political discussion, and to ask you a ton of personal questions. As the day goes on, we notice that even though they drive us crazy, we're extremely thankful to part of the dysfunctional.
2. Those million and one questions about college.
Whether you are a commuter or a drive home from college for thanksgiving break, you will be asked the same 100 questions by every single person in your family and then be asked by them again at Christmas. Why we may act annoyed by being asked about our classes, love life, and social lives, we secretly love having attention from the people we drove home to see.
3. The football
Even if your family doesn't watch football, it is probably still on the TV. If your family does enjoy this all american sport, then the game is probably on every TV in the house and yelling can be heard down the street.
4. The turkey
WE HAVE MADE IT. I mean really this is the real deal. We wait all day for this moment. Our mouths water as we watch the turkey being cut, and then we feast. All of the political discussions, questions, and football cheers pause for a short moment as we fulfill our needs with turkey.
5. The other food
Okay so the turkey is important, but it's not Thanksgiving with just turkey. There's dressing, green bean casserole, many other types of meat, mashed potatoes, cranberries, gravy, rice, and bread, lots of bread.
6. The food coma.
About 20 minutes after you finish feasting, the food coma becomes all too real. The dishes are done, and your family has gathered back by the TV. Of course football is still on, some grumbled cheers might come from your uncle before he falls asleep. Some small talk is made but if we're being real, everyone is too full and satisfied to function and has begun to dream of sugar plum fairies and left over turkey.
7. Dessert
Some time has passed and our food has settled, so why not eat some more? Pecan pie, pumpkin pie, cookies, pudding, brownies--you name it, and it's probably being pulled out of Mary Poppins magical bag of never ending food.
8. The day after.
You wake up to realize that everyone is on the prowl for that last slice of pecan pie. There are not many things better than the leftovers from Thanksgiving dinner. It's like Christmas for your taste buds. Speaking of Christmas, it's a prime day to decorate your homes and blasting your Christmas tunes so loud that it annoys the neighbors.
Overall, Thanksgiving is very important. Even though the food seems to be the center of the day, that's not the reason that we gather as families. We need to remember to be thankful for more than just the turkey and pecan pie.
