Halloweekend in College: As Told By Mean Girls

Halloween is easily one of the most anticipated weekends in college. College students trade in the one night of trick-or-treating and exchange it with potentially four straight nights (Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday) of partying in a variety of costumes.

According to Urban Dictionary, Halloweekend is defined as: “the weekend before Halloween (starting on Friday and ending on Monday or whatever day Halloween falls on). It does not matter what day of the week Halloween is because parties happen all weekend long anyways. Halloweekends are a big hit in any college town. Many people have multiple costumes for each night of Halloweekend.”

So when you go to college, costumes are still a thing. But, when you cross over the imaginary line from childhood to college Halloween, the costumes drastically alter. For most girls, it almost becomes a competition of who can wear the least amount of clothing but still be considered in “costume.” or how to make childhood costumes sexy. I know moms, you would've "never dressed that way", right? For example, the very stereotypical Halloween costumes for girls are being animals, mainly animals derived from the feline family: household cat, cheetah, or lion. Basically these costumes only require an animal-eared headband, a black dress and heels; simple.

Other “classic” girl Halloween costumes include hot nerds, sexy cops, Risky Business, clowns, Waldo, Thing 1/Thing 2, sexy Minnie Mouse, and of course Karen from Mean Girls (“I’m a Mouse Duh!”). At least half of the costumes listed are just a reinvention of the innocent childhood version we all once knew.

For guys, I think they actually win in the creative category. I truly feel that the men dress up better for Halloween because they dress up to be funny. Some classic funny costumes include: the Pope, a Rabbi, being a girl (Basic White Girl), super heroes, and various TV/Movie characters.

In general, there are “funny” costumes for both guys and girls and if pulled off right, they're sure to be a hit at any house-party. The fruit suits are always a big thing, whether it be the banana suit or a lime suit. Some of my personal favorites this season are the pizza, hotdog, Breaking Bad meth cooker outfits, the infamous Miley Cyrus jumpsuit, Spice Girls, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Coupling up with your girls, your guys, or a significant other can definitely make your costume ten times more fun, especially when done DIY style! Check back to one of my latest articles for help on a last minute DIY costume for tonight:

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Whether you met your new love interest online, through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
