Since it is January, many people are still on a New Year’s resolution high and are packing the gyms in brand new work out apparel. However, after the first few weeks, quite a few tend to lose their motivation and start making excuses.
I don’t have time. You can get a pretty thorough workout in just 30 minutes if that’s all the time that you budget -- that is only two percent of your day. I bet you can squeeze that in. And with some gyms on campus being open from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m., you can probably snag a machine next to the good TV.
I have nothing to wear to the gym. First off, I know you are lying because you hit the active wear sales over the holidays and have about ten pairs of Nike shorts that you consider casual wear. Even if none of that clothing existed, I am pretty sure you could dig that old high school gym uniform out of your dresser. Nothing says fitness like basketball shorts with your last name on them.
I can’t get to the gym. Do you need a gym to run? Or do jumping jacks and pushups? Didn’t think so. Search for workouts on YouTube. Do yoga in your living room.
I don’t know what to do or how to do it. The wonderful RPAC offers almost endless options for different workout classes that are offered every day of the week. Cross training not your style? Then maybe give hiphop or Zumba a try. Or get an adrenaline rush from a cycle or TRX class. All of the classes have great high-energy music, too, so staying focused and motivated shouldn’t be a problem.
I don’t want to look stupid. If you ever really take a look around, you will realize that everyone has moments when they look stupid or silly. It is an inevitable part of life, and avoiding the gym is not going to change that one.
I’ll be bored; I’d rather watch TV. Thanks to the gods of television and procrastination, Netflix is available on your phone. Which means as long as you remember to bring your earbuds with you, you can watch endless episodes of Friends or How I Met Your Mother as you sweat it out in the gym.
I’m too tired. Unless you just pulled an all-nighter, exercising will give you more energy. It will also boost your endorphins and help you get a better night’s sleep so you can be more rested the next day.
So get excited and make the most of our beautiful gyms that are almost as big and amazing as the Olympic training center.
