The man. The myth. The legend. For 29 years, Coach Frank Beamer has led the Virginia Tech football team to countless victories. Every home football game, Lane Stadium is packed with excited and trembling bodies, who all come for one thing - to cheer on their favorite football team and coach. Beamer was an alumni of the school and the football team, as a starting cornerback. He ultimately achieved his dream of being the head coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies.
Recently, Coach Beamer has surprised us all and officially announced his retirement via Twitter. Yes, we are all devastated. Beamer is and will forever be associated with Hokie football. He does have a street named after him (Beamer Way)! With his impressive overall record of 231-115-2, he took the football team to great lengths and beyond. He and the team ran with it to the end zone, reaching ultimate success. Coming from a small town in Southern Virginia, we all came to love the man, the myth, the legend.
When Coach Beamer became the head coach, the program shifted from Big East Conference (BCC) to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), competing against schools such as Florida State University, Duke University, and University of North Carolina. Beamer definitely took the program and surged it into the atmosphere.
In his thirteenth season, in 1999, Beamer trained his starting quarterback, Michael Vick. Vick is now a professional football player playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but while playing for Virginia Tech, the football team was undefeated until the championship game, when they lost to Florida State University. This was Coach Beamer's best season with the Virginia Tech Hokies. He claimed 10 out of 11 winning seasons of Virginia Tech.
So will we miss Coach Beamer? Of course. Without a doubt, Coach Beamer is possibly the greatest thing to ever happen to Virginia Tech football. Beamer will forever be a part of Hokie Nation because, heck, anyone who supports Virginia Tech is a part of Hokie Nation. Beamer is forever engraved into our hearts. Never say goodbye, only look ahead in the future. You've left a great legacy here at Virginia Tech; let's hope someone can follow in the gigantic footsteps you left behind.
