Good Coach vs. Bad Coach

How many of us have played a sport and had a coach that made an everlasting influence on us? There are good coaches and bad coaches. Most people, when they think of a coach, they think of someone who is always yelling or that they are just there to win games. Many coaches are portrayed as guys that are just about themselves and not the team.

Coaches are known for being strict, uncaring, and callous people. None of those characteristics, though, make a coach a bad coach. Those players that go through a season with a coach and learn nothing about character or life outside of their sport had a bad coach. Many kids do not know what to do without sports or do not have the grades to get through life without sports. As coaches, it is part of our job to help a player become a better person, on and off the field. I believe that coaches have the ability to change kids’ lives.

What is a good coach? A good coach is someone who inspires, shows leadership, and is always there for support. A good coach makes sure his or her athlete builds the right character to last outside of the sport. When coaching, you show kids how to become better at their sport as well as improving their life skills. Often a coach can have more of an impact on an athlete’s life than their own parents. You also have to make sure these athletes have a bond with you that can never break.

How many of your coaches do you think you can call on years later after you have graduated or continued on to a next level of playing? The coaches you can still contact and will still help you with life decisions are good coaches. Establish a relationship with a good coach, because they will always be in your corner no matter what.

Why do I Coach?

As a coach, my number one goal is to always change my athletes’ lives for the better. I make sure my athletes know my rules about grades, respect, and accountability because those three are an enormous part of what being an athlete is about. I know most kids want to play college football, so when they come to me I make sure they have the abilities and character to be successful at the next level. I want to make sure that every person that meets "Coach Juss" understands that I have the ability to change their lives.

I want them to know that if they are going through anything upsetting or stressful in their lives that they can talk to me about it. I try to make sure that every kid I coach has the opportunity to not only play football at the next level but also to excel in college and after. Coaches have the ability to change the lives of every kid that comes through their program. I make sure the kids I come into contact with never forget about me, and can always say that "Coach was always there for me."

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
