8 New Semester Goals Versus Their Realities

I may have good intentions for the semester, but I have poor execution.

If you are anything like me, you go into a new semester with plans of getting your act together and finishing the semester strong. However, if you are anything like me, this plan typically does not last long. I have good intentions, but poor execution, so here is a comparison of my goals to my reality.

1. I will be super organized.

I plan to get my act together this semester. I am going to write down every assignment in my planner so I don't miss any.

Reality: I will lose my planner immediately

While I plan to get organized, I lose my planner somewhere in the craziness of the first couple weeks of school and do not find it again until the end of the semester.

2. I will go to all my classes

This semester I am going to get serious about school. It is straight A's from here on out, and I am going to do so by attending all my classes, no matter how tired I am.

Reality: I will oversleep and miss a class during the second week.

During the second week, I will forget to set an alarm or won't hear it go off, and I will oversleep and miss class. This probably won't be the only time it happens.

3. I will go to bed on at a decent time.

This semester I am actually going to get the recommended 8-9 hours of sleep every night. I will wake up a refreshed, productive human.

Reality: I will stay up until 2 am the night before my first class.

I won't even make it a day into the semester before sticking to my usual bad habit of staying up way too late and ending up way too tired to function the next day.

4. I will get work done early.

Since I will have all my assignments written down in my planner, I will be able to start on them early, do a little at a time and ultimately turn my assignments in early.

Reality: 11:58 counts as early, right?

If the assignment isn't due until 11:59 pm then 11:58 pm still counts as early, so I will still be doing all right on this goal.

5. I will eat healthy.

This semester I am not going to eat Taco Bell three times in a week. I am going to eat lots of vegetables and maybe even meal prep.

Reality: I will still eat Taco Bell three times a week.

Who am I kidding? Taco Bell is good and meal prep is not. There is no way I have enough self control to break this bad habit.

6. I will exercise more.

I am going to get up early every morning and hit the gym or go on a run. I am really going to take care of my body this semester.

Reality: Walking to class definitely counts as exercise.

There is no way I am getting up early since I've been up since 2 a.m., not to mention running is the worst. I just don't hate myself enough to do it.

7. I will Keep My Room Clean.

I will throw away unnecessary things and keep my room clean so that it can be a more productive space.

Reality: I will immediately destroy my room

I will bring back way too much stuff from home, and before I can put it all away, I will be overwhelmed by the semester.

8. I am going to spend less money.

I am going to budget my money and not spend it on random things I find on Amazon at 2 a.m.

Reality: I am addicted to online shopping and refuse to stop.

Online shopping is how I cope with stress. Plus there isn't much else to do at 2 am, and Amazon has such great stuff.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
