Last week Oklahoma City Thunder star forward Kevin Durant announced he was moving over to the Golden State Warriors. Immediately, I was shocked at how much backlash he received for making a decision that was apparently very "weak". But I am fully convinced Durant made the best and smartest move for himself which is why I decide to go over the top three reasons why I think we all need to give Kevin Durant a break.
1. He Wants To Win A Title
Let's look at Durant's professional career, which started in 2008. He has won an NBA MVP Award, four NBA scoring titles, the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, an Olympic gold medal, has been selected to six All-NBA teams and seven All-Star teams. What's missing? A title. He has only made it to the finals once with Oklahoma City. Now, yes, he is leaving the city that has been home to him his entire career to head elsewhere where a title seems inevitable. But for a guy who deserved a championship a long time ago, and has still yet to see one, why wouldn't he go to a team that has been in the NBA Finals two years in a row, set a record for best regular season record this past year, and has another one of the best players in the game on their side? Durant knows that if he wants to win a title, his best chance is with the Warriors. And, we can't fault him for that.
2. Stephen Curry Wants Him There
I hear a lot of people complaining on social media that if Durant joins Curry there is going to be a problem with ego and neither of them will want to pass the ball. Yes, ego probably will be a problem, you're right. Just like it is on every team ever. However, Curry clearly wants Durant there. In fact, Durant says that Curry was one of the biggest influences on his decision to join the Warriors. Durant says Curry texted him to "trust the Warriors pitch". I think this shows Curry wants to win as bad as Durant. I think they will both do whatever it takes to go the distance next year - even if that includes passing the ball. This could easily become the best team duo in basketball.
3. Winning The Title Won't Be As Easy As Everyone Says
Let's not kid ourselves here, the Warriors are the clear favorite to win the title next year. However, we have all seen moves like this flop before. Durant is going to have to adjust to a new city, new team and lots of pressure from both the fans, media and even himself. And as good as the Warriors now are, it's hard to see them winning more games than they did last year without Durant. And even with Durant, they still have plenty of competition elsewhere, including the Cavs who surprised everyone by beating the Warriors in the Finals. Being good on paper does not always lead to championships, and that's important to remember here. If the Warriors are going to win a title with Durant, he's going to have to play really well. At MVP caliber. And if he can do that, why would we care which team he wins the title with? He would deserve it after all, right?
