Halloween is easily my favorite holiday of the year, and it makes me so angry and frustrated when going through the stores, trying to find a costume. I look at the woman's section ,and all the options are scandalous and insulting. I found a skimpy Spongebob costume. Spongebob. How the hell does the Halloween costume industry make everything for women so sexual, even a children's cartoon character? I'm a senior in college, and I look forward to dressing up in a ridiculous costume every year, which has led me to either making them on my own or buying them from the men's section.
To the girls that still agree with Cady's quote from "Mean Girls," I came up with a list of reasons of why you should consider moving from "sexy" costumes to "funny" costumes:
1. You'll get more respect
There's no question that if a girl goes against the norm and wears a crazy/funny/random costume, she's going to get respect. It's always hilarious when you assume it's a boy underneath the costume but it turns out to be a girl. The more people you surprise, the better.
2. No need for makeup
This is probably what excites me the most about dressing like a big weirdo on Halloween. The only time I've had to wear makeup for a Halloween costume in college was when I was the Joker, and it wasn't to improve my look. Depending on what costume you choose to get, you can hide behind a mask all night. I don't know about you, but not having to worry about glitter and the perfect eye shadow or whatever girls do on Halloween to match their costumes sounds really good to me.
3. You don't have to worry about looking bloated
Ahhh, the beauty of not wearing a scandalous or tight costume. You can drink/eat as much as you want and no one will be able to tell. Think about how girls in the tiny little costumes have to prepare to wear that costume. Not us who wear the funny one pieces or baggy costumes. We can drink as much beer as we want and not have to worry about looking bloated. Thanks again, funny Halloween costumes!
4. You'll be much warmer
Depending on where you spend Halloween, it might be cold. This is always a struggle for the girls that wear the costumes that don't keep them warm. These girls either have to decide to bring their jacket to a party/bar and take the risk of losing it or choose to opt on that and just brave the cold and risk getting hypothermia. But for us girls who decide to go with the costume that covers you, we;ll be warm all night long.
5. Comfortable clothing
Another huge benefit to wearing a costume that is either baggy or completely covers you is that you get to be comfortable the entire night. The best is when you can wear just a t-shirt and shorts underneath and feel like you're in pajamas all night. Show me a girl that doesn't think this sounds amazing and I'll show you a liar.
6. You'll make your father proud
There's no doubt that all fathers with daughters have the fear of what they'll be for Halloween. By choosing to get a funny costume over all the costumes that they make for women, you'll make him feel relieved that you aren't parading around in next to nothing. Keeping it humorous on Halloween makes everyone win all around. Your parents will be pumped that you have a sense of humor and you'll be pumped that they won't come across any pictures of you in a skimpy costume on Facebook.
Now readers, I'm not saying that it is a sin to dress up cute or a little provocative on Halloween. All I'm trying to say it's pretty fun to not be afraid of being the most ridiculous thing at the party. Girls get the short end of the stick when it comes to options for funny Halloween costumes, but I highly recommend looking for one this year, you won't regret it.
