I’m not talking about yelling “Yay touchdown!” and “Go sports!” when watching games or just cheering when everyone else does at football games. Also, not just going to events to wear my new pink sparkly jersey or to take selfies.
I’m talking about listening to baseball on the radio or knowing every stat or obscure fact that there is to know. This means actually watching the games and enjoying doing so. For me it's not a chore to watch sports on TV or go to a games because I really do like it. I’m the type of sports fan that makes me think my dad really wanted a son but got a daughter instead.
Being a girl that really knows sports, means guys always think you’re lying when you say so. They automatically assume I am saying that just to impress them. People assume I want guys to think I’m cool and different. Newsflash boys, girls can like sports too.
Girls do not only pretend to enjoy sports because they think it will make guys like them more.
I’m tired of holding back my sports knowledge so guys don’t get weird out by the fact that I may or may not know more about football than they do. Yes, I like the NBA and can name every player on the roster, that doesn’t mean that I am any less of a girl or that I am questioning a guy’s manhood. So I love baseball and you don’t even watch it—that doesn’t mean you are less of a guy because of it. Me liking sports should make no difference to anyone else, I just wish it was considered totally normal.
Sports are universally loved by so many people so why is it only a stereotypically granted interest for guys? There are millions of women out there who are over the moon for sports so why is it not a normal idea yet?
When I am watching EPSN and other people notice, I try to just ignore the strange looks.
I have grown up loving sports, it is just part of who I am and I am not going to change that anytime soon. My mom is a huge sports fan and can outargue most guys I know when it comes to sports. She is very passionate about all the sports in our state and she made me like sports even more.
I just really enjoy sports, it's as simple as that. Watching or playing, being at an event or reading about it, these things are something I’ve always loved and it shouldn’t be weird because I happen to be a girl.
