In some ways, women are considered a minority in our society. Women are paid less than men for the same amount of work. Why is that? A lot of men seem to think that they are better at doing certain jobs than we could ever possibly be so they get paid more.
When we were young girls, we still believed that we were just as good as the boys. We would challenge them to races on the playground or arm wrestling tournaments. Young girls haven't been exposed to the same amount of degrading comments as those of us who have had more life experience. We have experienced years of hateful remarks and the attitudes of men who think that since God created them first that they are superior in every way.
For years, people have been using the phrase "like a girl" as an insult.
You throw like a girl.
You run like a girl.
You fight like a girl.
Boys will use this phrase to show their peers that they are superior to them. Because they do something like a girl would, it somehow makes them inferior. Fighting siblings, joking friends, rival athletes, many people use this phrase when the other is not quite up to par. We need to change this whole idea around. There are many positive aspects of doing something "like a girl" that many men should strive for.
"Like a girl" means that you do something with grace.
Girls have a certain poise and sophistication behind their movements and we can be just as powerful as any boy.
"Like a girl" means that you're a badass. (Thanks, Obama!)
He totally kicked down that door like a girl, good job. There has been a video circulating recently of a young girl reading a letter she wrote to the White House after her brother decided that men's soccer is much better than women's soccer. The team had just recently won the world cup and was being honored at the White House. He invited her to read that letter before he gave a statement saying...
"Girls like Ayla have too often heard that they weren't somehow supposed to be as good at sports as boys. Ayla got mad and she should be mad with those attitudes. This team taught all America's children that playing like a girl means you're a badass." Watch the video here!
"Like a girl" has had a negative stigma about it for far too long. More and more girls are feeling incompetent and aren't taking action to make anything get better.
Change the view of doing something "like a girl." Be powerful and successful and strive to be whatever you could ever imagine. Do you want to be a doctor, an engineer, or the CEO of a huge company? You can do it! No matter what you will do it will be "like a girl" and that will be a good thing.
