To start, you should know that I adore this show. I started watching it as a kid when Saturday morning cartoons came on right after this show aired. Then I got reacquainted with it in high school and actually related to the plot line. So imagine my joy when it gets rebooted to answer the unfinished question: What happens to Rory?
When the series ended, it was implied that Loreali and Luke got back together, which was more than enough for me. However, Rory broke up with Logan (who I’m a big fan of) and was off to pursue a career. While that may be enough for people, it was clear there was more to be told, and frankly I just wanted to know if she ever found lasting love.
Okay spoilers ahead warning.
The reboot while beautifully crafted to include the notorious Gilmore Girls trademarks, answered NOTHING!
Okay, it didn’t answer nothing, but it did leave you on ANOTHER CLIFFHANGER! The last four words were as follows:
“Mom?”
“Yeah, honey.”
“I’m pregnant.”
*Credits roll*
*Jaw drops* *Starts to hear piercing scream**Realizes that it's herself that’s screaming*
I think I just described the scenario everyone witnessed.
Rory has always been the character I related to the most, and was always rooting for. As much as I admire Lorelai, I didn’t want Rory’s life to turn out like her’s- which is what’s implied with the final scene.
Essentially, it foreshadows that Rory is pregnant with Logan’s baby, and will probably end up marrying him for some short period of time. Only to end up with Jess, as the Luke to her Loreali (this is inferring from the longing glance he shot her way on the morning of Loreali’s wedding to Luke). It’s basically coming full circle for her, and I don’t like it.
I wanted something, anything, to change the tedious cycle that was initiated by hormonal sixteen year old, or if you wanna go way back, an uptight middle-aged women.
Maybe I’m looking for something too picturesque, for someone who isn’t. Yet, I still would of wanted more (hint, hint, reboot the freaking show indefinitely). Moreover, I do like Jess, but I also like Logan more, and wanted him and Rory together for the long run.
On a side-note, I did like the way Rory was essentially writing this TV series in a sense, or the book version of it. It would of been nice to see it actually become successful, though.
I feel cheated out of the conclusion or definite ending that I was promised going into this reboot. I wanted closure for a story that I had loved and followed for a significant portion of my life, and the lack thereof was extremely disappointing.
The overall reboot did pay homage to the Gilmore traditions, it just failed to provide a satisfactory ending to a beloved show.
