I decided to start re-watching "Gilmore Girls" this past week and I've just realized how purely amazing the show is. It has a lot of lessons that anyone can learn from and I'm just happier watching it. Honestly, I'm watching it as I write this article, because I just can't stop. It's like a book that I can't put down, but it's Netflix and I just can't turn it off. Since it's my current obsession, I'd like to talk to you about a few lessons that you can learn from this TV show.
1. Family is everything.
I think that we can all agree that Lorelai and Rory's relationship is goals. They are mother and daughter, but they are also best friends. Their relationship has taught me how important it is to be close with your family. When you are having friend problems, who is there? Your family. You can always go back to your family no matter what. They are a built-in support system and it is really important to realize how important they are. Rory has some great friends, but if there was ever a problem with them, she could always trust her mom to be there with ice cream and a joke to cheer her up. She could count on her grandparents to help her out or give her somewhere to stay. When you don't have anyone else, you have your family.
2. Don't settle.
The amount of relationships that both Rory and Lorelai went through have taught me this. They would date guys who they liked, sure, but they weren't good enough for them. In Lorelai's case, she almost got married even though she wasn't completely sure about the guy, because she liked feeling loved. She didn't want to be alone anymore and she almost gave in, but she realized at the last second that she wasn't going to be happy being married to the wrong guy. She called off the wedding and kept waiting. Little did she know, the guy she was supposed to be with was right in front of her, on the other side of the coffee she drank every morning. I was rooting for Luke throughout the entire show, waiting for Lorelai to realize that they were meant to be together. I almost caved a couple of times, like when Christopher swooped in or when Max used his words to woo her, but I was glad when she didn't settle and waited for the best guy in the show. Never settle for less than your Luke, OK?
3. Never be too serious.
If there is one thing that I've learned the most from all of the Gilmore girls, it is to never be too serious. Lorelai is always cracking jokes and I love it. Her witty personality is amazing and it makes life more fun. Rory inherited her mother's fantastic wit, which Lorelai originally got from her mother. Although Emily Gilmore is often serious, she has her sassy side. My favorite episodes are where we get to see all three of them throwing out jokes. Lorelai is right when she said she's dramatic and that's why she is my all-time favorite character. I have vowed to be less serious and more silly from now on.
4. Be kind to people.
We all know that Paris is not the nicest or easiest person to deal with. She started out being constantly mean to Rory and Rory had every reason to be mean right back, but that's not the type of person she is. Rory did everything she could to be nice to Paris and to keep her positive outlook. She helped Paris get her first date and then she lent Paris her mother's clothes to wear on the date. Except for a few times when she couldn't muster up the positivity, Rory always responded to Paris with kindness. Eventually, she wore Paris down and they became friends. Paris, someone who had very few friends because of her cold, judging demeanor, finally realized she had a friend in Rory, because she was so nice. When you're nice to someone, you might be the only one who is. You could completely change their life because of a few kind words. I aspire to be as kind, patient, and sweet as Rory Gilmore.
5. Reading is cool.
I already knew that reading was cool, but some people don't realize that. Rory has a deep love for books and she is not ashamed of it. She never leaves the house without a book, even for parties. She will carry it around in her purse just in case she has a spare moment to sit down and dive into another fictional world. Her dream book is the compact Oxford English Dictionary. Her boyfriend at the time, Dean, offers to take her to a bookstore and watch her browse for six hours, because that would be the perfect date for her. She fangirls over any and all books and cannot get enough time to read them all. If that doesn't make you realize how amazing books are, then I don't know what will.
These are just a few of the many lessons you can learn from "Gilmore Girls." If I listed them all, you'd get tired of reading this, so go watch "Gilmore Girls" and learn the lessons yourself!
