Why Getting Help Matters
Kennedy Harris

My sophomore year in high school started with a tragedy. A peer I saw every day took his own life on the second week of school. I watched as my whole grade fell apart and suffered through the loss of a friend. I didn't know him well; I saw him in the morning because he was always in the same teacher's class and I followed him on Instagram. Once my mom got the email that he passed, I assumed it was some kind of freak accident, like a car accident, but when I walked into school next day I saw friends of mine sobbing and talking about suicide. I went to my first period and cried the whole time; I even went to the bathroom to cool down. My teachers let us have the day to ourselves and do what we needed. There were grief counseling stations set up in the media center for anyone who needed it.

He was a very sweet guy and literally everybody was his friend, but he was hiding his pain. The people who talked to him every day didn't know how bad he felt inside. He affected the entire school, and it brought us all together. I remember texting a girl I didn't know to say that we should be friends and she responded with "I love you." His funeral was an open casket. I saw his lifeless body and could not believe that he had been breathing just a week before. His family's speeches were the saddest part; they shared funny stories, but when the laughter stopped, you could feel their pain rushing back into their bodies. A lot of kids from my grade came, and afterwards we huddled in a circle and his 3 closest friends spoke about how if anybody needed anything they were there, even if we had never spoken to them.

We all grew together but it took some time for school to feel normal again. I no longer feel the need to hold grudges, truly dislike a person, or have drama because in a split second that won't matter. If you feel like you're overwhelmed with life, depressed, or suicidal I beg of you to talk to someone or get help. Suicide isn't to be taken lightly; it affects everyone, even people you don't know. Please be kind to everyone, and if you have a grudge or a problem with someone, end it. It's not worth it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
