Whether you wish to pursue a career in the medical field or you genuinely like helping people, working at a hospital or doctor's office will change your view on life. You will quickly be subject to life-changing experiences, and some things you have never seen before. However, certain situations will break your heart and others will warm it. Through the chaos, just remind yourself to take it all in with a grain of salt.
Being placed where you have an opportunity to work with doctors, and being able to do some of the same things is incredible. The chance to learn from a doctor is life-changing and will give you a look into the future of your wanted occupation. In general, the patients are what makes the idea of being a nurse everything in my life; I get to strive to make them better while learning new things.
At the end of the day, even if it's the small things like playing with a little kid, or giving them a sticker, the experience has to start somewhere.
Putting a simple smile on a patient's face, or getting a little laugh from them, makes my day. You never really know what a patient is going through; it could be the hardest time in their life . . . that's why you should always have a smile on your face. Even if you are having the worst day, you need to show them that their feelings count, at that exact moment. Simply bringing a child a toy or coloring book, or getting an elderly patient some water, shows that they are the most important thing. When you go forth in life, it is these exact acts that will help you better you skills to help those that you come into contact with.
On the other hand, you must also be able to handle taking care of people who are not always in a great mood. Being sick or injured takes a tremendous toll on a person and can make them act different than they usual do; you learn to not take anything personally, and sometimes you care for them even more.
Knowing that some of the patients you care for are very weak, you quickly learn your responsibilities of checking their well-being. Being responsible for many dependent people at a time can get chaotic. This being said, you have to make quick, correct decisions.
At the end of the day, it's rewarding to look back and see all you have accomplished.
