I am the first to admit that every Monday night I cuddle up with my SF Giants throw blanket and turn the television to ABC channel to watch the latest Bachelor or Bachelorette make out with 10 different people in an attempt to find their “one true love." Sometimes, I even wish I was them! Everything from the sparkly dresses, attractive people, and exotic dates across the world, transform my dreams into a reality. But, after reading a few eye-opening articles and actually using my common sense, I realize that none of that was real.
We sit around the television several nights a week watching and trying to live vicariously through these glamorous, fabricated scenes. I don’t know about you, but I think it's about time we start taking our heads out of reality TV and back into the real world.
Now, before you continue to read this article I want you to ask yourself a couple of questions. First, have you ever watched an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians and found yourself wishing you had a body like Kylie? Or see the lavish parties and love triangles from Vanderpump Rules and wondering why boys don’t fight over you that way? There is an answer to these… but I’m not sure if you want to hear it. IT’S FAKE.
All of the dinners, outfits, even physical appearances of modern reality stars are set up to have perfect lighting or injected with silicone. The shows and their stars go to great lengths each day in order to create an experience their viewers want to look at even more than the last episode. Although, do the viewers truly enjoy it? Yes, in some ways. Reality TV has allowed its viewers a way to escape in the most real form available. They give a glimpse into many aspects of wealth and opportunity most do not have, but, reality stars have taken it too far.
Viewers, especially young women, watch these shows comparing themselves to the characters on the screen. They are losing sight on what real women and beauty is, because of the pressures and emphasis these stars have placed on them. I speak on behalf of many young women my age when saying that I do not feel as beautiful or confident in myself due to outside expectations raised from reality TV stars and their social media presence. The small screen does not display real life love stories or natural beauty; it shows us a fake world depicted with the use of real people. Instead of watching Kim in a skin tight dress tonight, go for a walk in the real park with 3D trees.
