Getting into shape can be daunting for some. If you are not one who actively goes to the gym every day. It can be easy to get discouraged when it comes down to exercise and, let's face it, running on a treadmill and lifting weights isn't exactly your definition of enjoyable. Have no fear! There are many great ways to enjoyably get into shape while still getting the workout you want. It's all a matter of broadening your horizons and getting creative.
Running Programs
Running isn't every person's ideal way to workout but for others, they wouldn't want it any other way. However, when you first get started, it can difficult to stay on track, especially if you are running by yourself. Lucky for you, often running stores hold their own running programs, an awesome way to stay on schedule and meet new running buddies! Plus, the store owner and employees can assist you with any questions you may have about the correct running shoes and equipment.
"The type of shoe you need really depends on what you are training for," said Scott Gall, owner of Runner's Flat in Cedar Falls, IA. The store holds "Monday Night Mayhem" and "Thursty Thursdays" for their customer runners. "If you are training for a marathon, you are going to need a different shoe than someone who runs a 5k."
Gall recommends those who are starting with running start out slow - doing too much, too soon can cause injury.
Hot Yoga
Yoga is a great way to gain flexibility and build strength - perfect for those who don't feel like running a marathon is the best way to start. Hot yoga is a class all its own. With studio temperatures ranging from 8o to 100 degrees, hot yoga mimics traditional India yoga origins. The heat makes your body work harder and burn more calories while purging harmful toxins from the body. Th heat alos makes it easier to achieve more complex yoga poses.
"Yoga has a lower impact with a lot of strength building," said Kara Yahn, owner of Balance Yoga in Cedar Falls, IA. "It makes it ideal for those who are struggling with a fitness commitment."
Yahn said it's not just a work out for her - it's a lifestyle.
Karate
Day-to-day life can be busy, a fact that karate instructor Mujo Mustafic understands fully. He suggests karate classes as a great way to be involved with family while still getting a daily work out.
"It is met for the whole family," Mustafic said. "I have moms, dads and their children practice together."
Karate classes teach students discipline and the psychology of the body to better prevent injury. Not only do you get a great work out possibly with your family, but you learn important self-defense maneuvers.
"In class, you have to focus," Mustafic said. "Karate teaches self-confidence. The students are open to trying something different."
Belly Dancing
In the modern day world, the cookie-cutter shape is the body to lust after. Unfortunately, not every two people are built the same, leaving room for self-doubt and lack of body confidence.
Helen Harton, director of the Prairie Rose Middle Eastern Dance Troupe in Waterloo, IA, gives students the perfect way to get into shape while embracing their bodies in every shape and size while staying true to Middle Eastern cultures.
"You meet a lot of people you wouldn't run into otherwise," said Harton. "It really works your shoulders, toes and legs. It improves back flexibility."
Angie Fuller, one of Harton's students, said that it doesn't matter a person's shape or size, belly dancing makes all feel beautiful.
"It's called belly dancing and a lot of people automatically assume that means you have to show your belly," Harton said. "But you don't. you dance however you are most comfortable."
