When you leave for college you are basically given the chance to start over in a completely new place with new people. When talking about going to college I specifically remember telling my mom that I was going to workout everyday since our university has a nice gym on campus that we could utilize. Well…. You’ve probably guessed it, but that didn’t happen. I was so busy trying to adapt to college, make new friends, and ultimately find my classes on time and not sit in the wrong class for 30 minutes.
College is hard. It’s really hard, especially you’re first year. You’re trying to adapt to all these new changes and eating healthy and working out is most likely going to be the last thing on your mind. It is okay if you don't workout every single day and if you want ramen noodles for dinner go for it (in moderation)! Everyone is always so worried about gaining the dreaded “freshman 15”. For those of you who may not know what that is, it is the thought that going away to college you are going to gain 15 pounds your first year.
What people don’t think about is that our bodies are changing! I gained the freshman 15 along with many others in my class and its because we are getting older, our bodies are changing, and for the better! If I were to compare photos of me from freshman year to now you would see a huge difference, but not in a bad way.
You would see that I grew maybe an inch taller (which is a big deal for me!) but you would also see I have matured immensely and yes I put on weight but it is a good way. Ultimately, I am healthy.
The goal shouldn’t be to always have weight on your mind. These 4 years are the last years before you really go out into the real world. You should be worrying about your friends, your grades, and your memories being made. Because once you graduate you have real responsibilities. You can’t go nap in between classes and make ramen noodles for dinner every night anymore. I truly wish gaining the freshman 15 was not a thing because your not getting fat like everyone thinks, you're maturing and healthy. And #thickthighssavelives is now a trending hashtag so to all my fellow girls with thick thighs, it is okay and if you’re anything like me just embrace it because they are hardddd to get rid of.
