Joining a sorority was one of the greatest decisions of my life. I have already learned and gained so much from the incredible women I’m blessed to call my sisters. I’ve been learning and growing every moment since becoming a sorority woman, and for that, I’ll be forever grateful.
1. Unfathomable amounts of support
These women that become your sisters really do quickly become your home away from home. No matter if you are with your sisters in your college hometown, or if you’re traveling with them, your home is wherever you’re with them. Your sisters are there through the good and the bad, no matter the circumstances. Just when you think you’re alone, you always have 50+ amazing women who would be there for you and do anything for you in an instant. My sisters have gotten me through some difficult times, but have also celebrated with me through the most recent high points of my life.
2. Sense of community
Being a part of a sisterhood brings an automatic sense of belonging and unity. As a member of your chapter, and also the Greek community, you get to know so many great people with whom have a lot in common. Not only are you a part of the Greek community on your campus, but also the community with all other Greeks across the globe.
3. Memories that will last a lifetime
Whether it’s a chapter meeting or a sisterhood event, I have never once regretted spending time with my sisters. Even if I have to take a break from the pile of homework and go to a required chapter event, those moments were the perfect break from the stress of being a college student. The movie nights and study dates with my sisters are some of my favorite college memories.
4. Individual empowerment
Before joining my sisterhood, I wasn’t nearly as confident in myself as I am today. The incredible women in my chapter have given me the courage to be one hundred percent myself. My sisters will never fully grasp how much their love has contributed to the woman I am so proud to be today. I am confident, courageous, passionate, and empowered in large part due to them. They make me believe I can do anything I ever dream of doing.
5. Wisdom
My sorority sisters teach me so many life lessons without even realizing. The inspiration and insight they provide has helped me in just about every aspect of my life. My sorority experience has also been filled with many teaching and learning moments that I will never take for granted.
6. Leadership skills
I have held several chair positions that have bettered my leadership skills in several ways. Being on committees has built my teamwork skills, as well as my communication skills. Holding a chair position has taught me time management skills, delegating skills, and many others that I can definitely carry into my career past college. Sure, these positions have brought great responsibility, but I never dreaded doing any of the tasks necessary because I knew they were helping my chapter and creating great memories for my sisters.
7. Lifelong friendships
Personally, this is my favorite thing about being a sorority woman. I wouldn’t trade my friendships with my sisters for the world. They’re definitely some of my favorite people on the planet and I know that there’s no time limit on our friendship. There will definitely be sisters who will be standing next to me at my wedding, the Godmothers to my children, and hopefully playing cards next to me in the nursing home when we’re old and gray.
“People ask why I am in a sorority and I try to explain all the things a sorority is that they cannot see. A sorority is more than letters on a sweatshirt, I say. More than traditional songs, a gold pin, rituals, an obligation, or a way of life. A sorority is learning about people, a sorority is giving without expecting a return. A sorority is earning respect from others, as well as for yourself. A sorority will not solve all your problems, but it can definitely help. I have made amazing friends and found a confidence there to help me take life one step at a time.”
“My sisters remind me, by their very steadfastness, that truth, beauty and goodness exist in the world, and that, no matter what there are and always will be people loving people through the thick and thin.”
