From Teammates To Friends

Because I've met some of my best-friends through sports.

From Teammates To Friends
Alanna Jones

It's the first day of tryouts, and you walk onto the court as nervous but ready as ever. You look around, dazed and confused, at all the unfamiliar faces. People introduce themselves and you struggle to remember the multitude of names. You practice for a bit and try to get over the uncertainty that's creeping in. You try to familiarize yourself with these new people and their lives.

With each passing practice, you get a little closer with these once strangers. You learn their family members' names, where they grew up, what their dog looks like, and why they prefer coconut water over regular water. You begin to fall into a set routine with them. Practice for two hours here; practice for three hours there, and suddenly you realize that you began to view these people as much more than just your teammates - they're your friends. Now, practice isn't just drills and hitting balls around; it's seeing the people who make you smile a little wider and laugh a little louder.

I can't even tell you the amount of times I've felt as if I was having the worst day ever until I went to practice, spent time with my team, and left feeling like a new person. There's something so unbreakable about the bond between teammates. You guys see each other at your worst and best, carry each other through your highs and lows, and never stop supporting one another. They'll be there to listen to you when you got into a fight with your roommate or when you think your coach is being unreasonable. They'll give you your space when you lost a tough match but be there with arms wide open for a hug when you're ready to feel better. They'll give you advice when your swing wasn't as good as it could be or when you need help deciding what to wear that night.

Your teammates are with you every step of the way, every point lost, every point won, every drop of sweat, every tear, every laugh, every piece of good or bad news; they're there for you. Suddenly, the season is over and the title "teammate" is retired for "friend," and life couldn't be better.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
