Avoiding the Oh So Infamous Freshmen 15

Let’s be real. 15? Pshh, try a little more. Plus, it’s not only a freshmen thing.

1. Carry a Full Water Bottle Around At All Times

  • While in lecture, set your water on your desk and you'll find yourself reaching for it when you become bored (which is inevitable at times) or just plain thirsty, and you won't even notice how much of it is gone by the end of lecture! Make sure you keep it full, and if you think you might be too lazy to refill it or simply know you won’t take that time, grab a bigger bottle- a 32 oz, per say, and fill it up in the morning and keep it with you all day!

2. Actually use the gym. Make fitness a priority.

  • At most colleges, students are given free membership to the gym. Uh, did you guys get that? FREE. Yes, the gym may not be super top-notch, but it most likely has the basics: treadmill, elliptical, dumbbells, barbells, et cetera, et cetera. USE IT! It’s okay not to go everyday, but try to go as often as you can.

3. Dining Halls are a friend, not a foe!
  • So this one can sway both ways. If you only seem to be filling your plate with french fries and pizza, then you might think the dining halls are the unhealthiest place to go to get food. (Not to mention its buffet style). But, dining halls are actually some of the few places where you can grab steamed veggies, a salad, chicken sandwich, or some pasta and roasted chicken without spending many meals or dining points. Also, just because your friends are grabbing seconds doesn't mean you have to. Grab a bowl of fruit or refill your cup with water or tea and sip on that instead.

4. Join an intramural sport, club, or team.
  • There’s so many options other than going to the gym to get your workout in. If you prefer sports and team settings, join an intramural sport or look for outdoor clubs that your school has, such as a hiking club. Not only will you sweat, but you'll make new friends who have the same interests!

5. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

  • It's true! Skipping breakfast will only make you hungrier later. I know this may be hard, but wake up a little earlier to make time to eat breakfast. You'll thank yourself later!

6. Leave your car at home!

  • Some schools don't allow freshmen to have cars on campus and some do. Either way, try leaving your car at home if you'll be living on campus at least. There's usually transportation provided by your college, such as shuttles. If you're not big on getting your workout at the gym, then walking around can help you get some exercise in.

7. Keep healthy snacks in your dorm or apartment!

  • You'll be so much less tempted to eat a hot pocket if they're not there! Keep a variety of snacks, so that you'll have a healthy option whether you're craving something salty or something sweet.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
