5 Ways To Blend In As A Freshman

Before getting into this article, let me start off by saying no one should ever change themselves just to try to fit in with those around them. Be yourself. Always. But here are some tips as to how the newest KU students can blend in if they are worried about looking like freshmen.

1. Do not try to pay on the bus.

You don't have to pay to use the bus system. It is included in tuition. Not only will other students notice, but the bus drivers will probably look at you like you are crazy.

2. Know when and when not to hit on people.

Just the other day, I was in line at the book store and heard this poor freshman try to hit on a girl. She wasn't thrilled because it was one in the afternoon, the line to check out was long and she was just trying to buy her books. She was not in the mood to play 20 questions about her major, where she was from and what her favorite kind of music was. Then, a few days later, I was at the gym with one of my friends who is a senior. Two freshmen came up to her and started hitting on her. At the end of the night, they asked for her number. It's the gym, not a bar.

3. Do not ask others where the bar you are looking for is located.

My roommate and I were walking home from the Hawk last Wednesday from the coveted first dollar night of the year when a group of freshmen walked up to us and asked, "Where is the Hawk?" You should probably know where the bar is.

4. Do not travel in large groups of other freshmen.

There is nothing actually wrong with this. Hanging out with a bunch of friends is awesome. But, you also look like a herd of scared zebras on the African plains, hoping lions aren't on the prowl. You are stronger as a group, but also more noticeable.

5. Do not ask questions or say things about illegal activity in public.

Here are some examples.

"Where can I get a fake ID?"

"Do I look like I'm 21?" (While in line for a bar or trying to buy alcohol.)

"I can't believe they let me in here!" (In a bar.)

"Anybody know where I can buy some (name of drug)?"

If you don't want to look like a freshman, don't do these things. And if you don't want any legal trouble, stay away from that last one, especially.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
