Every little girl dreams of the day that she will meet her Prince Charming; the love of her life, who will sweep her off her feet. We all spent hours as children playing with dolls and making sure that there was a man by our Barbie's side to keep her company. For many, this illusion of fantasy fades with age. For some, it is because they have lost faith in the belief that magic can carry a relationship, while others believe that they are far too independent to have a man by their side. But what about the woman who believes in fairy tales; the woman who believes that love can truly be as wonderful and mysterious as the stories she was told as a young girl; the woman who believes, against all odds, that she can believe in fairy tales yet continue to grow in her own resolve and be entirely her own?
Being independent can mean a lot of things to a woman, but to me it means being able to stand on two feet and take the world by storm. It means believing in yourself above all things, and never letting anything or anyone tell you that you cannot accomplish what you set your mind to. In today's culture, it seems that women have turned their heads away from the once magical effect of love because of this new found "independence." They seem to think that they have to make a choice in life: love or independence.
So, this is for the independent woman who wants to be taken care of. I do not mean this in the regard of nice cars, face lifts and a comfortable lifestyle. Rather, this is for the woman who yearns for love, who strives for the fairytale: to be swept off her feet into the arms of a man who sees her for who she has made herself into. While being independent gives a woman a sense of great power in the world today, the idea of having someone to hold you after a long day, to speak with you when you cannot take your classmates or colleagues anymore, that is what I want. I want to know that I am not alone, that this life has someone waiting for me with a warm embrace and a soft smile at the end of a long day. Being taken care of means that your heart and your mind are in the hands of someone who can make all of your worries wash away. This person should never stop reminding you to reach higher and higher and to never settle for anything less than what you deserve. They do not hold you back from your work, your education or your passion. The man who is able to love the independent woman sees that everything you do, you do with an unsettled heart: a heart that yearns to be able to be free and fly away, but always remember where it belongs.
Fairy tales do not need a princess type of woman who does not lift a finger, but rather a rough and rugged spirit who never settles, and a man who embraces every milestone, every accomplishment, and still treats her like a queen.
For the independent women who wants to be taken care of: May your heart always have a place to call home. When it finally settles, may your mind wander and create, but always have a companion, and may you always remember that to be independent does not mean you have to be alone.
