Recently I have been seeing a lot of things on social media, specifically Twitter, that sound like this: "If you're over 130 pounds please don't wear leggings, crop tops, tank tops, etc." Then a little further down I'lll see a picture of some girl in the gym with leggings on and people are throwing the peach emoji all over it with heart eyes. Society has so far set a precedent for how people should look, especially women. Every day, girls wake up and feel bad about themselves because they don't look like the Kardashians. Women look at themselves in the mirror and are upset because they don't look like the women they see in the magazines. Every day females look at themselves and aren't happy. They find imperfections and flaws in themselves. They let the number on a scale determine their worth. They let new diet fads, quick fix pills, and exercise routines take over their world. It's time for a change.
Before I begin, I want to say that even I get caught up in this nonsense. I look in the mirror and see things I want to change and there are days where I let the scale determine my worth. On these days, I take a step back and think about one of my friends. My friend Sydni is without a doubt one of the most confident people I know. She is confident in herself and that never changes. There are times when a group of friends might be hanging out with Sydni in her room and she'll literally strip down completely naked in front of everyone to go shower. She loves herself and her body and as we all turn away and yell at her she is known to respond by saying, "I'm hot guys, I don't care." She will post selfies all over social media sites with captions like, "out here trying to slay." She does slay though. She slays with her confidence. She slays with her ability to not let anyone else but herself determine her worth. She is inspiring in that way.
So, to all the girls out there, we need to be more like that. I'm not saying we need to take our clothes off in front of our friends but we need to be more loving to ourselves. We deserve to wake up every morning and look at ourselves in the mirror and say wow, I am hot. We should love ourselves no matter what. We should respect ourselves enough to not let a number determine how we are going to feel about ourselves. We are beautiful, we are strong, we are unique. It's time that we don't let other people tell us how to think about ourselves. Keep wearing whatever you want. Keep doing whatever makes you feel good about yourself. Post those selfies in your leggings and crop top. Show the world that you are proud to be you. Keep inspiring other girls to love themselves when others put you down. We are all beautiful and we should be proud of that.
