Someone once told me, "Beware of the Sophomore slump." Okay, you also said I would gain 15 pounds last year and that didn't happen. I only gained 10 for the record but I heard it from multiple, credible sources. Warnings of turmoil and chaos were on their way in the approach of my second year of college. "Just wait till your Sophomore year, it will get worse." So are all the cups half-filled around here?!
The past year of my life has been a constant influx of ups and downs. I mean, my whole last semester was just an episode of "Snapped" waiting to happen. The Sophomore Slump was real. It was real and it attacked me but I'm here to say, it will all be okay.
Being young is a one-time deal. And sometimes it may feel like you're stuck in a rut but it's gone in the blink of an eye. Remember when your high school teachers said high school would be over before you knew it? These ruts, these moments of insecurity are all just bumps in your road.
You are probably thinking that you don't have a purpose, that you have no reason for existence. You're wrong. Existence can not be summed up simple adjectives that we put as our Instagram bio. Existence is something far more deep. We aren't born knowing our purpose, what would be the fun in that?
I always make the joke, "College will be the death of me." Let me tell you, most days I want to call my lawyer and write my will. And I'm about to make the most cliche statement known to this world. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I will not be offended if you stop reading now. But let me repeat, if it doesn't kill you then you can only heal from here.
It may seem like early classes and 15-page papers will be your demise but it won't. It might feel useless but I promise you will learn from it. You might want to give up, but if you give up it ends. Giving up is the equivalent to defeat and you are stronger than that.
There will come day and you will look back at these dark moments. And you will laugh. You'll laugh because they weren't really as bad as you thought. All those sleepless nights, research papers, and moments of defeat won't seem too bad in a decade. Being a college student is not your purpose. It's a step in a right direction that will eventually lead to your moment of clarity. But college will not define you. This isn't the end of your life. Waking up and running to three classes isn't your reason to be. There is something bigger headed your way. It might be far out in the distance but I promise you something is coming.
It can't rain all the time.
