I've lived in Florida for basically my entire life, and I do love it. However, when I tell people that I live in Florida, some automatic assumptions are made. While some of the stereotypes of Florida are not far off from reality, life in Florida is not how many people would assume it is.
Expectation: "The Sunshine State"
Reality: While we are a very very hot state, that does not mean that the sun is always shining. In fact, in the summer, storms are frequent, often two-to-three times per day.
Expectation: Disney World is, like, a weekly occurrence.
Reality: Disney World is expensive as heck, even if you live in Florida. While many Floridians do visit Disney more than a couple of times throughout their lifetime, it does not happen as often as many people assume. That would be a bank account drainer.
Expectation: Alligators are just crawling down the side of every road; they are basically a backyard companion.
Realty: We actually don't see alligators super often in everyday life, unless you go down by canals or walk through the Everglades. Iguanas and lizards, on the other hand, will not scare you in the least. They are found everywhere — in your house, by your pool, in your trees, by the side of the road. Everywhere.
Expectation: Oranges trees are everywhere because oranges are the best fruit in the entire world.
Reality: I haven't seen a single orange tree in the town that I live in. I know they exist in Florida, but they aren't taking over the state.
Expectation: Cockroaches.
Reality: Wrong. Palmetto bugs. They fly.

Reality: We are typically over 75 percent humidity and it is like swimming through the air. Glasses fog up, hair frizzes. It's insane.
Expectation: Famous people are just walking down the street, right?
Reality: Wrong. While there are occasional occurrences (my best friend actually went to the same school as Ariana Grande), it's not a typical thing. What you will see is a lot of snow birds.
