Christmas is fast approaching and the holiday season is usually a time of great prosperity but, for some, it can be a reminder of the things in life we're missing! So in-between all the ugly-Christmas sweater parties and gift wrapping, don't forget to do something for those who aren't as fortunate as you! Here are some tips if you don't know where to get started:
1. Donate your old winter clothes.
This is something so simple but so important. A lot of children go through the winter months without good jackets/jeans/shoes/thermals/etc.. This makes them more susceptible to illnesses and sets them apart from the other kids at school, sometimes making them the targeting of bullying. If you can, please do this.
2. Volunteer at the homeless shelter.
If you're over the age of 18, please consider volunteering at your local homeless shelter. During this time, most of the "regular" volunteers are gone for the holidays and the shelter may be understaffed. Consider helping!
3. Do a neighborhood canned food drive.
Clean out your pantry and donate what you can! See if you can get your neighbors to help too.
4. Make cards for the local children's hospital.
Sadly, there are a lot of children who have to spend their holidays in the hospital. Get a group of friends together and make some festive cards! It's a nice break from reality and makes the kids feel good.
5. Donate toys!
Every year, my sisters and I buy a new toy to donate. No child should wake up on Christmas with nothing to open! There are great organizations to get involved with that provide poverty stricken neighborhoods with new gifts on Christmas. Please consider donating!
