When you have a “motherly instinct,” life can be quite frustrating. It’s like we have a sixth sense that just is on twenty-four-seven, three-hundred-sixty-five days a year. No matter how hard we try to brush it off or ignore it we feel like something could drastically happen and we would never forgive ourselves.
Opening doors for drunk people so they don’t fall, and watching random toddlers in public to make sure they’re not alone is just the beginning of our life duties. Even though it can be frustrating sometimes, when your duties are done you feel a sense of relief and a smile one someone’s face makes it all worth it. Here are five things motherly women can relate to:
1. We assist the drunk.
Isn’t this everyone’s favorite? The refreshing 1:30 AM phone call rings loud and clear... Because, after all, it is 1:30 in the morning. Then trying to understand what the person on the other end is saying with the loud background noise is quite a challenge. The worst part by far is having to roll out of bed half asleep and get in your freezing car is just painful sometimes. Opening doors and getting water is a breeze-- cleaning up puke, not so much. Finally, at the end of the night when you finally crawl back into your bed knowing everyone is home safe makes falling asleep a little easier.
2. We are pro at being a ninja-spy-nanny.
It’s just a normal day at
the mall and you’re browsing through the T-shirt dresses when out of nowhere a
little toddler comes waddling along. You look up to see if they’re with someone
and BOOM- no one is there. Your first instinct is to scan the area and see if
anyone is carrying a diaper bag or looks similar to the child but nope-- no one
in site. Even though this isn’t your problem the smile on the little toddler
makes you compelled to keep an eye on her. Now you have to keep shopping but
also keep an eye on a child that’s not yours, without looking creepy: challenge
accepted. When Mom or Dad finally shows up you can let out a sigh of relief and
keep on shopping.
3. It's in our blood to call "dibs" on snack duty.
Maybe you’ve got an all-day shopping extravaganza planned, or maybe you’re just going for a walk in the park. Either way brining snacks is important. Stuffing your purse with enough for you, your three friends, a second round, and one extra in case you lose one or want to feed an animal is essential. Along with snack duty comes water duty. Making sure no one is dehydrated is important. Either way you’ve got them covered.
4. We are always the "reminderer."
When you’re a motherly person you’re usually on co-worker’s tails about work events, meetings, or parties. You also remind your friends of plans you may have a few hours before just to “check in” to make sure it’s a go. Being organized is key and keeping your date book up to date daily is very important. You don’t assume people are irresponsible or have forgotten-- you just like to communicate or double check for yourself on plans.
5. It's our responsibility to be the "cool mom."
Yes, even if you don't like it.
No I’m not crazy, and yes I may care a little too much. Will I change? No. Can I change? Probably not. Having a motherly instinct can be hard at times. Finding a healthy balance of caring, and not caring too much is key. Showing people you care usually inclines them to start caring about you. Sometimes they’ll care back other times not at all. Either way moving forward is key. Being the “cool mom” is a must because no one likes a nagger. That’s not fetch at all.
