As students and young adults who are constantly trying to find their place in the world, life can get overwhelming. Two years ago, when my anxiety reached new heights and I didn't have an outlet, I decided to try new things that would help. Below are a few of the things that have helped manage my stress and a few that I still haven't tried but look forward to:
1. Coloring Books
Last year, I bought an adult coloring book that is supposedly stress relieving, and trust me, it is. Whether you want to use markers or coloring pencils, sitting for about 10 minutes each day and coloring can help calm you and reboot your day.
2. Painting
I started painting about two years ago and it has been a fun journey. My advice on starting out: use acrylic paint and buy a starter set of brushes. Many paint stores carry starter sets and it’s a great way to save money and try something new. Also, you don’t have to be a great painter. My pieces are far from pretty but I always end up with a smile on my face at the end of my session.
3. Journal
Whether it’s keeping a diary or a bullet journal (haven’t tried that one), writing down your thoughts is the deep breath that your mind needs. All human beings tend to overthink, which isn’t bad but it can get overwhelming. Having a journal helps keep you at ease and makes you feel more in control.
4. Knitting
Personally, I haven’t tried this one but I’ve heard rave reviews. Whether you want to do it alone or start a knitting club, it’s productive and calming, so consider giving it a try.
5. Calligraphy
Like painting but with words, calligraphy helps the body calm down and allows your mind to relax with each stroke. If you are someone who loves to write or loves everything stationery, this one is definitely for you.
Whether you decide to try these or not, it's always good to have a healthy outlet for your stress. Try asking some of your family and friends what they do to manage stress. Good luck!
