A Letter to My Roommate

Thanks Roomie for being the best!

A Letter to My Roommate
Heidi Edwards

Dear Roomie,

I know it’s only the fifth week of school, so granted we haven’t known each other a very long time, but it’s been a great five weeks. I’ve never had to share a room with someone, so it was a bit scary, but you have made the transition a great one. Now when I go home, it’s weird not having someone in my room to talk to right before I fall asleep. Out of all the people who could’ve been my roommate, I’m glad you’re mine. So, thank you.

Thank you for being weird with me. I know I’m weird, and when I’m hyper, I’m ten times weirder. You join in and make it fun. You dance with me in the gym because that’s how you’re supposed to work out, right? You lay in bed laughing at random animals. You sing Disney songs late at night with your zebra pillow pet as Simba and lay on the floor watching movies eating cookie dough straight from the package. You make college more fun.

Thank you for loving the same sport I do. College is scary, so trying to find someone to play with me at night would be extremely scary. Lucky for me, I don’t have to look for anyone because I have you to go play with me. Setter and a middle hitter duo (insert Information Desk Person emoji)!

Thank you for teaching me how to sew. Okay, that was funny to you, but I literally messed up the second stitch. You let me try again and I actually finished the whole thing. So, thank you, maybe one day I’ll be able to sew a whole button on a shirt by myself.

Thank you for sharing stories. I love hearing your stories about your family, friends and your brother. OMG, yes, your brother. Please, tell me when I can meet him. The stories when I go home on the weekends are even better.

Thank you for being an art major. I’m not the most artistic and I’m pretty sure you’ve already figured that out. So, thanks for being artistic and knowing how to do most of the things I can’t figure out, like ironing a pocket on my shirt.

Thank you for liking the same music. One of my friends mentioned that one day she was playing music, and when her roommate walked in, she had to turn it off. That doesn’t happen with us. One day, I was playing music and when you walked in, you started singing. Jam sesh!

Thank you for wearing the same size as me. I’m pretty sure it was the first week that I wore one of your shirts. Thanks for that, by the way. Not only can we wear the same size shirts, but also jeans and shoes. I’ve never really had a friend that has the same size shoe as me, but you know the curse of big feet. So, I hope you know my closet is yours.

Thank you for being from out of state. There’s just the right mixture of exactly like me and completely different worlds. My town is extremely small compared to yours, but you still want to visit. To me, your town is huge and slightly scary, but I still can’t wait to go home with you.

Thank you for making college (so far) great. It’s been crazy and stressful, but tons of fun. There’s no one else that I would want as my roommate. I can’t wait to see what this year has in store for us.

The idea of having a roommate was scary. Everyone has heard the stories of people getting killed by their roommates or their roommate steals all their stuff, but so far you’ve been great. You’re more like a best friend than a roommate. Please know that you can come to me with anything. Whether it’s for help writing an essay or because a boy is blowing you off, I’ll be here. I can only imagine how great this year is going to be. Thanks Roomie for being the best!

Love,

Me

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
