Welcome to modern-day society,
I'm sure you're well aware
Instagram likes, Twitter followers
it's all so crazy, like a nightmare
With our self-obsessed culture
the most important thing about you is now your looks
If you're beautiful - just become an internet superstar
forget about hitting the books
With our bodies always on display,
it's easy to feel like you're not good enough
Girls logging hours on the treadmill,
guys doing everything to get buff.
It doesn't matter what you do
If you're skinny, you need curves
But don't be too curvy - or you'll be front-page news
"She gained soooo much weight!"
You can't hide in this social media world,
that's why we monitor what goes on our plate.
The mirror is where hours are spent
Picking and pulling at our least favorite parts,
wishing that Instagram model's body is for rent
So petrified to get close to someone
because then they'll see your flaws
scared that if they do, they'll be long gone
Did they see those stretch marks on my thigh?
I can't cover up every flaw
When someone calls me beautiful, it's a lie.
I'm never going to look like her
I don't have long legs and abs
The tears in my eyes are causing a blur.
Everyone says "love yourself"
It can be really hard
But do not do anything drastic
that can leave your life scarred
No matter the weight
no matter the number
Your life matters
Each and every one of us struggle with our body image and our self-esteem. It's hard to think about how many girls AND guys are suffering with eating disorders or body dysmorphic disorder. Whether you love working out and are constantly improving your fitness, or if you are perfectly fine with your body the way it is, try to be kinder to each other. You don't know what someone is going through just by looking at and judging their body. We are more than our appearance.
