Do you feel like you're in between stages of your life, just waiting and thinking as my favorite Disney princess movie's opening song is "When Will My Life Begin?" (it's from "Tangled," if you couldn't figure it out)? Thanks to a fellow writer of mine sending me a Tumblr post, I found out the name of this phenomenon: liminality. Further research led me to the words origins; it is an anthropological term that derives from the Latin word limen, with an accent on the i (which I cannot figure out how to make on my keyboard), meaning "a threshold."
You see, as humans, we are meant to have context in our lives. If something does not have context, then we fear it as it is the unknown; a human condition that we have heard of time and time again in English class. Think of a liminal space as something temporary, but in the right direction for the destination. An airport, parking lot, waiting room, etc. For me, I am currently in a threshold of life ever since returning from the Disney College Program, waiting to start a new semester at a new school, with a new major that should keep me on path to return to my final career destination: Disney.
This definition got me thinking. Aren't we told that life is a journey, so enjoy it, because the destination is death? When you look at that gravestone, that little line between your birth date and your death date, it's your life. Why is it that we are so unsatisfied with thresholds? The fact is, from birth, we are told to plan out everything in our lives. Graduate high school, go to college, get married, have kids, drill the same routine into them, and die. However, things don't always go as planned; life throws us curve balls. We consider many of those curve balls as liminal spaces. Has anyone thought instead that they might be your temporary destination? We should never be completely satisfied, but content with the situation given to us, and make the best of it. Regardless of your beliefs, I like to go by the saying, "When you make a plan, God laughs." There is truth in this to anyone, whether it is God or the universe.
I challenge those who are reading this today to stop and think, "am I making the most of this threshold in my life?" Why do I even consider this point in my life a threshold? I would love to hear your stories about the liminality that is going on in your life right now, please comment below your story. Not only will I as the writer feel like I have reached out with this article, but others who see your comments as well will feel the support they need during this time.
