As a young girl, I would flip through the crisp pages of Vogue magazine being mesmerized by the seemingly illusory world that these designers have created for us, and I always enjoyed the stories my mother told me about her travels to faraway places and the fashion she saw. I mean, meeting Sam and Libby Edelman and taking a tour of Steve Madden’s showroom were the experience of a lifetime. To me, fashion was always an important part of my life, but to many others I came across, it wasn’t the same feeling.
When most people hear the words, "fashion magazine," they think of super thin, famous models parading around in millions of dollars of clothes and jewels and all of the things that don’t matter in life. Surprisingly, they might be wrong.
Even in today’s world, it can still be hard to convince people that just because someone likes fashion, doesn’t mean they're unintelligent, selfish, and have no morals or values. When I tell people I want to work in the fashion industry, some people look at me like it’s meaningless or facile. Fashion means something, and it means something different to everyone. I’ve found that for most, fashion means who you are to the world and how people see you. It’s how you look and what makes a first impression last. When you pass people on the streets, it's what catches their eye. Everyone has a different and unique style and has an opinion on what and how they want people to see themselves.
Moreover, people also use style to express themselves and show your personality. Whether your colorful or minimal, there's something for everyone. The dreaded prep school uniforms are my greatest enemy with this one. They prevent people from showing who they are! Even though these are nothing but simple, everyday things that make fashion important to us, there are many other important things hidden below the surface of magazine covers and photo shoots.
Below the surface you can see that fashion is a place where history, culture, art, and writing combine. All cultures have different styles, even though it may be hard to notice at first. And whether its the letter from the editor or an interview for Lauren Powell Jobs, every piece in these fashion magazine is given immense thought and real world relation by an intelligent human being.
Next time you happen to see the latest edition of Vogue Magazine out on newsstands, I'm telling you, don't simply judge it by whats on the outside, and give it a second look. You might be surprised by what you'll find inside.
