Fall Semester Survival Guide: Five Tips To Survive The Semester

Long live the seemingly endless summer in which our only worries were awkward tan lines and having to park three blocks away from the beach because you may have slept in just a little too much. Now, the most dreaded time of the year has been brought upon us college students. As this highly anticipated semester is upon us, we are haunted with déjà vu in flashing black-and-white images--images of our library all-nighters, espresso shot overdoses, and cramming so hard for an exam you couldn't even remember your name. Nonetheless, we are back and ready to kick some fall semester booty. Here are some tips that can be useful this semester for the sake of your sanity:

1. Organize Yourself

The trickiest part about college is time management. Between classes, jobs, and involvements, it can sometimes seem stressful when handling everything at once on a daily basis. The solution is to schedule your time. Whether you use the reminder system on your phone, or invest in a snazzy agenda, setting time blocks for studying, work, etc. will ease your anxiety and not overwhelm you as much as if you just kept everything as a mental note.

2. Don't Overdo It

We all want to be successful at our jobs, earn good grades, go out with our friends, and get a good night's rest. However, all of the above are difficult to accomplish all at once. Prioritize what's most important in your life and take everything in small doses. Plan your classes and extracurricular activities accordingly, in order to avoid a future meltdown.

3. Don't forget to take a break

It's easy to get caught up in life. Amid all the chaos that goes on during this time, it's common for us to forget to set aside some "me time." Whenever life seems a bit too strenuous, take some time for yourself to do what you like. Whether it's reading a book, going to the gym, or just watching some Netflix at home, taking a mental break will help you get back on your feet and continue to succeed.

4. Set goals

Creating a list of short-term and long-term goals will motivate you to continue striving for success. Setting goals not only challenges you mentally, but makes you feel appreciation towards your accomplishments and how hard you've worked in order to get where you are.

5. Treat yourself

There's no greater feeling than rewarding yourself after earning a perfect score on an exam you studied for endlessly. Something as simple as buying yourself your favorite food will serve as motivation and acknowledgement of your dedication to success. In the end, we are our own worst critic and it's important to recognize our achievements from time to time.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
