As an 18-year-old, I anxiously await a privilege that has taken me this long to obtain: voting. And although this right is the staple of American freedom, expression, and democracy, how come I and so many of my peers are not excited to finally exercise this right? In my opinion, it’s the mere fact that most people describe their preferred candidate as “the lesser of two evils.” No matter which side you support, it mainly seems to be because you do not want the other candidate to win. What we need to acknowledge about our system is that a new president is coming whether we like it or not and the best thing we can do is become informed voters. This article focuses on the most imperative events from the 2016 Republican National Convention.
1. Trump's entrance
As Trump walked out to introduce his wife before her speech, the aura of the convention took an unexpected yet unsurprising twist. The entire scene changed from that of a respected political event to that of a rock concert. The lights dimmed as "We Are The Champions" played ambiguously in the background.
2. Melania's plagiarized speech
On the first day of the RNC, many were in awe at the eloquent speech Melania Trump delivered, showcasing a softer, more sentimental side of Trump. However, just hours after her speech, news articles rapidly spread revealing Melania's plagiarism from Michelle Obama's speech at the DNC in 2008.
3. Christie's hostile attack against Clinton
Indisputably, this election has demonstrated a pettiness between two candidates who both focus on their counterattack on the next. When Clinton calls Trump "a racist," he replies that "she is desperate" and "she is sad." However, Christie fired at Clinton in the most hateful way thus far, staging a mock trial at the RNC, beginning the crowd chant "lock her up!"
4. Carson's theory on Clinton, Alinsky, and Lucifer
As her alleged idol and inspiration for her senior thesis, Saul Alinsky wrote an activism book in 1971, "Rules for Radicals." In it, he references Lucifer "as the first radical known to man." Because of this reference and Hillary's admiration towards Alinsky, former candidate Ben Carson makes the unwarranted connection that Clinton therefore worships Lucifer.
5. Cruz's disloyalty to the Trump Campaign
Former Republican candidate Ted Cruz gets booed at the Republican National Convention when he refuses to endorse Trump, coining the expression, "vote your conscience."
6. Ivanka's liberal appeal
Primarily, Ivanka's beauty and poise captivated the convention; however, her appeal extended far past those two entities. As neither a categoric Democrat nor Republican, Ivanka pushed for liberal policies such as equal pay for equal work and more widely-accessible childcare. Stating how her father has always demonstrates equal wages paints a fonder picture of the perceived sexist.
7. Trump's long, dreary, and negative acceptance speech.
For an hour and fifteen minutes, viewers suffered through the redundancy of Trump's speech prompting his followers that all of their concerns would be rectified and rather than disclosing any specific plan of action, he reverted to the well-reiterated phrase "believe me."
