My Parents have always told me and my brother, that the way we turn out, is like their report card as a parent. So far, I think that they are doing a darn good job. They have taught me everything that they know and take parenting as a full-time job. I couldn’t be more appreciative of my parents for all they have done for me over the years, and what they continue to do every day. Growing up I didn’t always realize how lucky I was, but now as I’ve entered college I realize everything they have done for me and appreciate them so much more. Below, are four of the reasons that I think parents are so important, and why you should be grateful for them as well.
They are your creators
Although it is obvious, they gave you life and made the decision to bring you into this world. I always thought that that it was a given that every adult would have children. In reality, not all adults do, and it is a life sacrifice but also a blessing to have children. My mom went through nine months of pain, in order for me to be here. With that sacrifice she made for me, it makes me feel so proud, so I will make sacrifices for her as well.
Tough Love
Looking in hindsight, I can see all the times where they were being hard on me, but it was for my own good. My dad always had me working with him at his job in the summers since I was in 6th grade. At the time, I thought this wasn’t fair because all my friends were out playing, but it made me have a strong work ethic which I realize is so important. It was things like this that I didn’t understand at the time, but as I grew up my awareness grew and I realized that they were hard on me. They wanted me to be appreciative for everything I had and also to make me into a man. If they treated you to whatever you wanted you would probably grow up spoiled, have no character, and not live to your fullest potential.
They bring you up when you are down
Although they can be hard on you at times, they can have a comforting side as well. Whether it be a bad test, a hard break up, or you lost a big game they are there for you when you think that you have hit rock bottom. That is why I always like to stick with the motto “Family First”. They care for you so much more than you even know. No matter how many times you mess up, even if they are mad, they will be there by your side to love you.
Unconditional love forever
The love parents have for their children is infinite and never goes away. I realize that now that I am in college and they still call to check up to see how I am doing and give me advice. Even when you are grown up they will still be helping you. After a lifetime of them taking care of you and making sacrifices, you should take care of them and make sacrifices as well.
Next time you talk to your parents, tell them how much you love them for everything that they have done for you. You need to realize that they aren’t going to be by your side forever, so you need to give as much attention and appreciation as you can now, because you never know when they might be gone.
