A single video on Twitter. That's all it took for 17-year old Kelvin Pena's life to change forever. His account exploded in popularity when he posted his first "Deer Squad" video (under the handle @COLDGAMEKELV) Ever since, Pena has gained over 78K followers on the social media site.
The seemingly simple videos feature Pena along with a number of other wild deer roaming around his yard, in which he has befriended. While the videos may come across as silly and unrealistic, they have quickly become a hit with adults and children alike. The deer have are completely tame and are continuously kept fed by Pena and his friends.
At the beginning, the deer were only being fed junk foods such as donuts and chips. Social media blew up at Pena, claiming that these types of foods were detrimental to the deer's health and his innocent entertainment may be be doing more harm than good. As a response, Pena began feeding his furry friends fruits and vegetables along with flavored "deer corn" to put the public at ease.
As he continued to gain popularity, Pena started brainstorming ways he could raise money for his cause, feeding the deer. He began selling t-shirts with the phrase "Everybody Eats" which later became the slogan of his entire page. The shirts featured an image of a cartoon deer appearing to be eating stacks of money. When this project began, Pena never imagined in his wildest dreams that it could gain so much popularity within such a short time.
Over the past few months, Pena has discovered he could put his sudden popularity to good use and develop an idea that could ultimently help the deer along with poverty-stricken families across the country. He publically announced the "Everybody Eats" project to social media earlier this year.
Since Pena has always been interested in helping others, both furry and not, the premise of this project was centered around that. He used the Thanksgiving holiday to jump start his plans, teaming up with a number of his friends to purchase carloads of both fresh and canned food for people in need. Everything from cranberry sauce to whole turkeys have been donated to low-income families across the country, in hopes to make their Thanksgiving a bit more cheerful. Everyone involved in the project has been more than grateful for Pena and his efforts.
As for the deer, they are now world famous across social media and have sparked an initiative that is nothing short of astonishing. Pena and his crew plan to grow the project in the coming years in hopes to reach their end goal of making sure "Everybody Eats."
