The 2016 Euro soccer tournament is coming to a close. On Thursday, July 7, 2016 the last semi-final game was played. It has been a month full of excitement and history making for the national soccer teams in Europe.
On Wednesday, July 6, 2016 Wales played Portugal in the first semi-final game of the Euros. The game was played in Lyon, France. The game was a match against Christiano Rolando of Portugal and Gareth Bale of Wales. Both players are the strongest players on their prospective teams and great goal scorers. The first half was uneventful. Both teams were playing strong offense and defense. Portugal had most of the possession in the first half and the second half. Rolando scored the first goal of the game at the 50th minute with a header from a corner. Portugal scored three minutes later with a goal from Nani. Wales was unable to keep possession long enough and have enough accuracy to score. Portugal won the semi 2-0. Wales, even though they lost, made history for their country, and they should be proud.
The second semi, Germany vs. France, was played at the Stade Vèlodrome on July 7. Germany went in as the favorite to win the match. Germany are the current World Cup champions. Germany started the match strong, playing with a similar offensive style they used in the World Cup. They were making drives, accurate passes and dominating possession. It appeared that Germany would win the match without a problem. At the 45 minute mark, Bastian Schweinsteiger of Germany was yellow carded for a hand ball during a French corner kick. Since the hand ball happened in the box, France was rewarded with a penalty kick. Antoine Griezmann was chosen to take the penalty at the 47 minute. German goalie Manuel Neuer was unable to block the penalty, and France was up 1-0 at the half.
In the second half, France gained confidence and had the majority of the possession, and they were taking more risks. Germany must have been shocked because they were unable to bring the momentum they had in the first half to the second. Griezmann scored again at the 72 minute, and they game was over with that goal. Germany tried to come back during the last 20 minutes, but they were unable to score.
France beat the world champs on their home turf 2-0 all thanks to 25 year old Griezmann. Germany ended up with four yellow cards including the players of Schweinsteiger, Ozil, Draxler and Can. On the French side, there were two yellow cards: one was for Kante. It was a semi-final, and France will play Portugal Sunday, July 10 in Paris.
