Why ESPN’s 2015 Body Issue Is So Important

This year's highlighted athletes bared it all and showed us that athletes come in all shapes and sizes.

Why ESPN’s 2015 Body Issue Is So Important
ESPN, Mark Seliger

When you think of any magazine’s "body" issue, several examples may come to mind. From the Victoria’s Secret swimsuit catalog to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, there are plenty examples of magazine spreads with relatively homogenous body types represented. Small-framed, slim females with gorgeous hair seem to dominate the mainstream media, especially when summer rolls around and the heavier winter layers are shed. However, what is so important about this year’s ESPN Body Issue is the diversity in the images we see. The pictures not only present a larger group of athletes, but they also show those reading (who are traditionally non-athletes) that the bodies we want do not always have to equate to those in the swimsuit editions (though one must admit Adriana Lima and company look fabulous, too).

It’s all about perspective and knowing that healthy and athletic does not always mean skinny. There are different body types all over the world, and the ESPN Body Issue does a great job of highlighting athletic diversity in this year’s edition.

Each year, the Body Issue’s release is greeted with large media coverage, in part due to the de-stigmatized images ESPN aims to present. One notable featured athlete from this year includes Amanda Bingson, a Track and Field hammer thrower for Team USA. Amanda sat down with Morty Ain for her ESPN interview to shed some light on how she began breaking barriers for women in the hammer throw. Although she may not have a six-pack or overtly-toned muscle groups, “it's important to show that athletes come in all shapes and sizes,” Bingson said of her appearance in this year’s issue. This mentality, and the sentiments expressed in interviews of others for the issue, show a common theme of acceptance and continued growth as an industry.

Athletes, both male and female come in all shapes and sizes, and it is time we begin to appreciate that. Interested in reading more about this year’s Body Issue? Head over to ESPN and check out the features, or click through some of my favorite shots from this year’s spread!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
